LOGAN - DeVou Evan “Dee” Humphreys, 92, passed away peacefully at the Legacy House Assisted Living Center on December 4, 2005.
He was born March 18th, 1913, the oldest son of Evan and Anna Humphreys of Millville Utah. He attended school in Millville and South Cache High School. On November 14, 1935, he married Melba Layne of Lewiston in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
Dee served for two years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While he was in the Navy he organized and managed the riding stable at Farragut, Idaho. He made friends with a German prisoner that worked at the stable and corresponded with him for over 50 years. He has sponsored and promoted softball, baseball, bowling and hockey teams in both Logan and Preston. Dee and his wife Melba helped organize horse shows and they received many awards while showing their matched pairs of black and white pintos in Utah, Idaho, and Washington State. Dee has served as secretary/treasurer of the Logan Mounted Police, president of the Logan Dance Club, and was on the board of directors of the Logan Golf and Country Club.
Dee was an avid fisherman and kept a journal of his 60 plus trips each year that he publishes as “A FISH STORY” that he shares with his fishing friends. He took up golf at the age of 50 and has recorded a hole in one twice since then.
Dee and his wife Melba have teamed up to own and operate a variety of businesses. They opened Dee’s Drive Inn in Preston, a bowling alley in Ogden, and Mel O Dee Ranch in Logan. They are probably best known as the wallpaper and paint people from State Hardware, later called State Wallpaper, which they owned and operated on Main Street in Logan for 40 years. They also owned and managed residential and commercial properties. Dee and Melba celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on November 14, 2002.
Dee was active in the LDS church most of his life. He served as president of the Deacon, Teacher and Priest quorums and secretary of the Elders and High Priest quorums. He was also a scoutmaster, counselor in Sunday school and counselor in the young men organization. He was a High Priest in the Logan Lundstrom Park Third Ward.
He is survived by a daughter Marlene (Keith) Warner of Clearfield; son Rick D. Humphreys (Cindy); seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, DeLone West and brother Arden Humphreys.
We are grateful to friends and neighbors who have been a great support to Dee and to our family. We express our thanks to the members of the Logan Lundstrom Park Third Ward for their compassion and service over the years. We appreciate the drivers at the LTD that gave Dad a ride to “the office”, Angie’s Restaurant, three times a week so he could visit with friends. A special thanks to the staff at the Legacy House Assisted Living Center for the exceptional care they gave to our father and to Access Hospice for the comfort and support they provided to our family.
