Donald (Don) Baxter

Don Baxter

Hyrum, Utah: Donald N. (Don) Baxter was born March 20, 1921in Hyrum, Utah to Robert
LeRoy and Blanche Neilsen Baxter. He was the youngest of seven children. He passed away on September 18, 2005 at Logan Regional Hospital.
He attended Lincoln Elementary School and South Cache High School.
He worked with his family in Blacksmith Fork Canyon at Baxter’s Sawmill.
He married Fay Reeder of North Logan, Utah on August 13, 1941 in Malad, Idaho. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple. They are the parents of two children, Jerry Don Baxter and ReNae Baxter Griffin. They have four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
During World War II, Don served in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific area. Eighteen months were spent in the Philippines where he was wounded twice and at the end of the war his unit was sent to Korea where he destroyed Japanese aircraft and weapons. He said he destroyed more Japanese airplanes than were shot down during the entire war.
Don worked at Kennecott Copper for thirty-seven years as a machinist and heavy equipment operator.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, and checkers (unless the games became a marathon). He loved Yellowstone and spent many days during the summer camping there with his family. He was usually the camp cook for breakfast.
He was a talented handy-man, building many of the houses in which he lived. After he retired in 1981, he and Fay moved to Hyrum and built their home.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, September 22, 2005 at the Logan City Cemetery with military honors. Family and friends may call at the Allen-Cranney Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan on Thursday from 10:30-11:45 a.m. Condolences may be sent to the family and a register book signed at www.allenmortuaries.net
