HYDE PARK - Don W. Thomas, 85, (the best father and grandfather in the known world) died peacefully Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 at home.
Don was born Aug. 8, 1923 in Palmyra, Utah to John B. and Kate Annie Thomas. He was the 3rd of 4 boys. He attended Spanish Fork High School, Utah State University and Iowa State University.
He served in the US Army where he was stationed in England during World War II. He worked at USU as an Extension Veterinarian where he traveled throughout rural Utah, helping the small farmers and ranchers whose way of life he shared and loved so much.
Don married his high school sweetheart, Merla Swenson, June 9, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. They made their home in Hyde Park, the best place on earth to raise six children along with numerous cats, dogs, horses and various forms of 4-H projects.
Dad loved repairing things and taking care of the needs of his children. Rendering service was his way of expressing his love. He was a caring, kind individual and loved visiting with others. He was active in the LDS Church serving as a teacher, home teacher and Bishop.
Don is survived by his wife Merla, son Lynn (Nancy) Thomas, daughter Paula (Roger) Tew, son Kent (Laurie) Thomas, daughters Debbie (Don) Carter, Sally (Kendall) Johnson, Janna (Del) Espinosa; 23 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; Brothers, Wm. J. Thomas and J. Alan Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Marissa Tew, and brother Edwin Thomas.
He rode the crest of a new century with grace, hard-work, dignity and faith. Ever-willing to the end to help his family.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 16 at 11:00 am in the Hyde Park Stake Center, 535 East 200 South, Hyde Park. Friends may call at the Allen Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North, North Logan, from 6-8 pm, Monday, December 15 and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m prior to services. Interment in the Hyde Park Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion.
