Doris Skidmore

Doris was born in Minnesota on 22 May 1924 to Martin Edward Stephens & Emma Hazel Anderson. She was raised on a farm near a Chippewa Indian Reservation. Her most unfavorite animal on the farm was the rooster. It would chase her around the farmyard. She would go out of her way to circumvent where the rooster was, but it would find her and the chase was on. She helped her Dad working at the gas station and building out-buildings on the farm. She harvested wild rice and learned the joy of work. Her parents moved the family to Long Beach, CA in 1940.
Being the original “Rosie the Riveter” with her dark red hair working at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, CA from 1941 to 1944, she was noticed by Henry Justin Skidmore in 1942. They were married in Hollywood, CA in Sep 1943 and spent their honeymoon in Utah in October for the deer hunt. It took Dad 22 years to get her to carry a gun and deer hunt with him. She never missed a hunt until 2008. She got a deer with her first shot and over the years was nicknamed Annie Oakley.
Doris and Henry were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple in Oct 1951 and lived in Long Beach until 1953, when they moved to El Segundo, CA and lived there until 1976.
Dad and Mom retired to Mendon, UT in 1976.
Their first three children were born in Long Beach, CA: James Justin (Mary), Janet (Skip [deceased]) Flinders and Joan Jones. Their last child was born in Inglewood, CA: Jerry Wayne (Kimberly).
Doris took sewing classes with her two best friends Mary Stevens and Earline Johnson and became an accomplished seamstress. Mom and Earline were also bowling buddies.
The mayor of Mendon, Max Baker, appointed Doris as City Treasurer for 11 years and gave her five jobs to do: Read water meters for Mendon & Cobblestone and send out water bills until computerization; Clerk for the Justice of the Peace Court; Set up and run the Rabies Clinic; sell dog licenses and anything else pertaining to the City.
She was a temple worker for 11-1/2 years at the Logan LDS Temple. She served in many different positions in the LDS Church, but her favorite in the Mendon 2nd Ward was in the nursery and her favorite in California was being Den Mother. She worked in scouting for over 20 years.
Doris and Henry were married 67 years and traveled the world together during their retirement until Henry was too ill to travel.
Doris’ 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren love her very much and know she is now happily reunited with her “Hankie”.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Allen-Hall Mortuary and will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., Logan, with a viewing prior from 9:30 to 10:30 AM and a viewing on Wednesday evening, September 23, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, also at the mortuary.
