Dorothy Ripper Davis, age 89, passed away surrounded by her family on September 25, 2018 at Logan Regional Hospital.
Dorothy was born in Cross Cut, Texas to John and Nola Ripper on February 10, 1929, the youngest sibling of brothers Val and Jack. She married Edward F. Davis on July 30, 1949 and they made their home in Kermit, Texas, where their children, Janice and Mark, were born. Dorothy was a talented pianist from a very young age, and she blessed everyone in her life with her playing and with her beautiful tenor voice. She was also very athletic and loved playing and watching all sports. She particularly excelled at tennis, bowling, and softball, and we spent our childhood summers on ball diamonds around Texas as our mom traveled with competition teams.
Dorothy went back to community college in Texas, and the family moved to Logan in 1972, where she finished her degree in social work at Utah State. Dorothy worked several years at State Hardware and then many years in the lab at Logan Regional Hospital, where she retired in 2001. She opened her home to children who needed one and during this time, another son, Somchat, joined the family. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she held many callings. She enjoyed working as a missionary in the Family History department, where she was a beta tester for the Family Search program, and wrote teaching protocols as it was being developed.
Dorothy’s greatest joy was her family, especially her grandchildren; Megan Ermer (Garrett), Michelle, Emily and Mckenzie Davis, and Matthew and Ryan Cooley. She supported them in all of their pursuits and loved spending time with them traveling, doing puzzles, having marshmallow wars, teaching them to play poker, and having them all sleepover (which she enjoyed more in later years when she could take out her hearing aids.) She taught them all to drive.
Dorothy was a living example of the principle of charity. She never had a lot of money, but what she had, she gave. She brought people into her home when she found them in need of a hand. We were introduced to the most wonderful people, from hitchhikers to stranded motorcyclists from other countries. She taught us all about Christlike love.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Janice Cooley (Bill), Mark Davis (Shelly), and Somchat Davis (Shara and children Mckenna and Maraya); her grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joan Ripper; and many friends who she considered family.
