Doyle Charles Howell

Millville, Utah: Doyle Charles Howell, 89, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008, at Logan Regional Hospital. He was born August 28, 1918 in Smithfield, Utah to Charles Reuben Howell and Verna Hansen Howell, the first of four children. He graduated from North Cache High School.
In 1940, Doyle enlisted in the US Army Air Corps at Fort Douglas, Utah. He was selected for technical training as an airplane and engine mechanic and sent to Isaac Delgado Central Trades School in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Doyle married Naudine Neves of Millville, Utah, in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho, on April 7, 1942, while he was stationed in Spokane, Washington. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.
Doyle served 2 years overseas during WWII in England, Africa and Italy. He was promoted to Master Sergeant and crew chief on B17 bombers. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Service Defense Medal, European, African, and Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Distinguished Unit Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster.
After an honorable discharge under demobilization, Doyle and Naudine made their home in Providence, Utah, and worked as a respected auto mechanic at Pack Motor, Hansen Motor, Cook Transportation and Davis Chrysler Dodge in Logan. Since 1961, after a year in Whittier, California, they have lived in Millville, Utah, where Doyle built their home by himself with the help of his family.
Doyle and Naudine are the parents of eight children, 5 sons and 3 daughters: Clinton Doyle (Dixie) of Millville; Susan Kay Bouchier (Eugene) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; John Charles (Paula) of South Weber; Bradley Lynn (Kristine) of Avon; Joseph Wayne (Maria) of Fredericksburg, Texas; Wendell Robert (Lavona) of Patterson, California; Melanie Ann Conder (Clinton) of Genola; Ruth Naudine Barker (Richard) of Millville.
Naudine died in 2003, his son Wayne in 2007, and his infant great granddaughter Julianna Elise Kuhlmann in 2006. His brother Wade Howell and his sister Athalie Howell Allen also preceeded him in death. He is survived by his sister Shirley Howell May and his half-brother Jack Matkin, 7 children, 35 grandchildren, and 38 great grandchildren.
Doyle loved to travel both before and after retirement. He loved cars. Since Naudine’s death, Doyle enjoyed attending the Logan Temple each Tuesday, serving as a patron the entire day. He also enjoyed gardening and feeding the birds during the winter. He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2008 at 1:00 PM in the Millville 3rd Ward meetinghouse, 110 South Main, Millville, Utah. There will be a viewing Friday at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center, Logan, Utah from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and prior to services at the meetinghouse from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
