Dr. Earl Kent Gibbs, known as “Doc” to most, age 86, left this earth February 9th, 2025.
Kent was born on December 8, 1938 in Sabina, OH to the late Earl M Gibbs (Marjory) & Mary Catherine Curl Gibbs. Sisters, Barbara Williams (d) & Michelle Valentine.
He primarily grew up in Jamestown, OH. From an early age was raised by his father living in a small hotel above a little restaurant. This is where he got his three meals a day and the workers became his extended family. He spent many summers at Camp Charlevoix, Michigan as a camper and later a counselor. He graduated salutatorian from Greeneview High School. Then on to Ohio Wesleyan where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Upon graduation from OWU he went on to University of Michigan where he graduated medical school in the spring of 1964. He then accepted and completed a year of Medical / Surgical internship and found a wife at Butterworths Hospital in Grand Rapids Michigan. Carole, his loving and devoted wife who was a nurse, were married June 4th, 1965. (59yrs)
Kent was drafted in 1965 during Vietnam. He was in the Navy’s public health service as part of the physician only “Barry Plan”, stationed at the Rosebud Indian Reservation in SD 1965-1967. There he took care of most anything and everything in addition to OB. After exiting the service, he and Carole moved back to Michigan to complete a three year residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. While there they became parents to Michael (1967) & Marc (1970).
Kent and Carole took a trip out west where they discovered Cache Valley and how special it was. They moved to Logan in 1970, Kent started working at the Budge Clinic from 1970-1972 and then opened his private practice. 1974 brought his 3rd son Matthew. Kent completed the rest of his career in private practice until his retirement in 2003. Private practice was in his DNA. Kent was an advocate for his many patients in their medical and personal lives. He truly cared for them, considering them friends first and patients second. Without an exact number, Kent delivered well over 7,000 babies in Cache Valley. Quite a feat….
Kent enjoyed a great number of other interests and hobbies. When he got involved, he jumped in with both feet: A member of the Logan Golf and Country Club for many years, including a term as the President. The annual Father’s Day golf tournament was always memorable. A gentleman's farmer, raising chickens and Wagyu cattle. He started with one which quickly became two and when it came time to slow down a bit there were over 60 head. A part time drag racer, he held a NHRA drag license and traveled around the country with several different cars (all Pontiacs) over the years. Member of the Elks, Fastpitch Softball, City league Basketball, Bowling, Snowmobiling, ATV’s at the sand dunes. Seems we could go on and on.
For Kent, Faith and family are very important: A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan since 1970, he served on session and also as a Deacon. While sometimes quiet, Kent will always be remembered for his compassionate counsel and care for all.
Kent will be sorely missed by: His beloved wife Carole; Sons: Michael (Tylene) Gibbs of Smithfield, UT; Marc (Laurie) Gibbs of Baraboo, WI; Matthew (Amber) Gibbs of Salt Lake City, UT. Grandchildren: Channing, Emily, Abigail, Charlie, Bentley & Boston.
A special thank you to Ritchie Petersen for the wonderful care and compassion these last few years. Kents dear friend and caregiver.
Thank you also to Marci at CNA hospice for her tender care.
