Hyrum, UT – Ebba Renee Nielsen, 89, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2016 in Logan, Utah. She was born March 14, 1927 in Logan, Utah to George Gordon and Ebba Mathilda Winborg Nielsen. She moved to Hyrum as a little girl and gladly lived in the same home for most of her life.
She attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from South Cache High School in Hyrum. She recently gathered with her classmates to celebrate their 71st high school class reunion. She was very fond of reminiscing about the past.
As a young girl she picked strawberries and pole beans, learning the value of hard work at an early age. Immediately following graduation from high school she began employment at the Utah General Depot in Ogden, Utah. She was employed there for one year when she was approached with an opportunity to work for the telephone company. She worked as a telephone operator for 32 years, retiring from Mountain Bell with pride. In retirement she was employed as a seasonal secretary at Hyrum State Park. She devoted 10 enjoyable years helping park rangers and employees, as well as park visitors. She made many friends while she was working and especially liked providing assistance to others.
Renee spent much of her life taking care of and aiding her mom and dad. She was a diligent and dutiful daughter, always thinking of her parents. Many of Renee’s best times were spent with her sister LuDean and brother-in-law Richard; they included her in their family life and all sorts of adventures. One of their favorite things to do was travel to visit their brother Val and his wife Arlean in Las Vegas. The gang of five would merrily try new restaurants, attend live shows, visit family and friends, and explore the latest tourist attractions. Other beloved pastimes for the siblings were reunions and fun times with their cousins.
She supported countless charitable organizations throughout the years. She loved reading, handwork, playing the piano, gardening, sending greeting cards, and watching sports. She was an avid Utah Jazz, Utah State Aggies, Smithfield Blue Sox Baseball and Sky View Bobcats fan. She thought nothing was better than cheering on and supporting all of her Hansen family in their sporting endeavors. Being an aunt, great-aunt, and great-great aunt was truly a joy to her.
Renee was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and happily served in several capacities. The calling she looked forward to most was ward greeter. It brought her delight to see her wonderful neighbors and friends each week and say hello, treat a child to a piece of candy, or give a hug.
Renee was preceded in death by her parents, sister and brother-in-law; Mary LuDean and Richard Vagn Hansen. She is survived by her brother, Gordon Val (Arlean) Nielsen; nieces and nephews; Steven (Kyle) Nielsen, Jana Nielsen (Joseph) Wyson, David (Linda) Hansen, Paul (Kathleen) Hansen, Amy Hansen, and Emily Hansen (Charles) Schoffstall, as well as numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was also loved by her extended Hansen family who embraced her as their own.
The family wishes to thank; Access Home Health Care and Hospice, Meals on Wheels of Cache County, Legacy House Assisted Living of Logan, and her Hyrum friends and neighbors who greatly enhanced her quality of life.
Funeral services will be held at 12 pm Saturday, July 16, with a visitation from 10:30 to 11:30am at the Hyrum 11th Ward Chapel, 595 South 200 East, Hyrum. Interment will follow at Hyrum City Cemetery. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed online at
