He spent his childhood and teen years in Goshen, Utah, graduating from Payson High School in May of 1943. He was called into the Army and was sworn in just three weeks later.
Completing his basic training at Camp Abbot, Oregon, in the Corps. of Engineers, he went on to attend Oregon State College in the Army ASTP program and later, the Army Engineers surveying school at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, graduating in April of 1944. Edward (known as Ted or Ed) went overseas in May of 1944 and served with the Army Construction Engineers in New Guinea and participated in the invasion of the Philippine Islands at Leyte, Mindoro and Mindanao. While being transported, by the Navy, with the 240th Engineers to participate in the invasion of Mindoro in the Philippines, his ship (an LST) was hit by a Japanese suicide plane, and he spent several hours in the Sulu Sea before being rescued by a U.S. destroyer. In November 1945, Ed was sent to Japan to participate in the Army of Occupation and was discharged, with the rank of Tech Sergeant, in February 1946.
In March of 1946 he married Ann Jean Hiatt, a Payson High classmate, with whom he had carried on a correspondence courtship during his Army service. They moved to Logan where Ed attended Utah State University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Commerce, with Accounting as his specialty. He later graduated from the School of Mortgage Banking at Northwestern University in Chicago, after completing a correspondence course from Logan and attending summer school for three years.
In 1949, he joined Utah Mortgage Loan Corporation, in Logan, as an Assistant Auditor. UMLC was subsequently purchased by First Security Corp. and later Wells Fargo. Ed retired in 1985 as Senior Vice President after thirty-six years of service. Three children were born to Ed and Jean: Scott, Leslie, and Brad.
Ed’s wife, Ann Jean, died in 1969 of breast cancer, after a courageous fight, over a period of three years. In 1972 he married Lucile Lundstrom Schvaneveldt, the mother of three children. Lucile died in August of 2009.
Ed enjoyed writing, prose and verse, something he would have loved to pursue as a profession, but found business and accounting to be more profitable at making a living. In addition to his “World War 2 Reminiscences”, which along with his WW2 correspondence he donated to Utah State University, he has written family histories and numerous poems to family and friends over the years to commemorate birthdays, anniversaries and other occasions. He was an avid reader, preferring fact to fiction, and had an impressive collection of World War II literature. He enjoyed all seasons of the year, but winter the least. In the other three seasons, he enjoyed working in his yard. He and his wife, Lucile, loved to travel and over the years visited Europe and Canada, as well as various parts of the U.S. They enjoyed cruises and especially Hawaii, where they returned several times.
Ed has been active in the LDS Church serving in various callings such as Ward and Stake finance clerk, Stake auditor, Young Men’s presidencies as well as Priesthood quorum presidencies and a home teacher.
