Elda Rawlings Juchau
Elda Rawlings Juchau, age 104, passed away at her home in Logan
on the afternoon of June 24, 2008 of age related causes. She had enjoyed very good health until April of this year.
Elda was born on August 27, 1903, in Fairview, Idaho. She was the 8th and last child of Ether and Lorette Jane Inglet Rawlings. Her mother died when Elda was four years old, leaving six young children. Two siblings had died in infancy. Two years later her father married Helene Jacobsen. One daughter was born to this union.
Elda attended Elementary school in Fairview and the Oneida Academy in Preston.
She enjoyed school and was an excellent student. It was her desire to become a nurse and she applied to the Budge Clinic in Logan but there were no openings at that time. While waiting for one to come up she was asked to help her older sister in Virginia, Idaho
With a new baby. It was here she met Levere Juchau who became her future husband. They were married April 17, 1924 in the Salt Lake Temple. They began their married lives in Virginia where Levere farmed a small dairy farm and worked for the Railroad. Elda worked hard both in the home and on the farm always supporting Levere. They became the parents of six children---three boys and three girls.
Elda was always very active in the LDS church and held many positions, often more than one at a time. She was an avid reader and instilled this in her children.
Both Elda and Levere always hoped to retire to Logan and work in the Temple and in December of 1965 they were able to do this. They spent many years serving as officiators and Mother remembered those years as some of the happiest
of her life. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady at the Hospital which she enjoyed. She loved to do handwork and made many lovely afghans, doilies, baby shawls, tablecloths and hangers which she was happy to share with family and friends.
Levere passed away from a stroke in October of 1998. They would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary the following April. After his passing Elda wanted something to fill her time so when friends supplied her with a computer she began to do name extractions. She had never learned to type but became very adept and continued to do this until her illness began in April, averaging 250 names each week. She enjoyed this very much and we, as a family, are very grateful to Roxie Marshall who kept her supplied with names during all those years and became a good friend to Mother.
Mother insisted on living in her own home and was able to care for herself, still making bread, cookies, pies and cakes for all of us until her final weeks. Mother was amazing in her life and even in her passing.
Elda is survived by her five living children, one son, Dan, having died of cancer at the age of 22. They are Clyde (Carol) of Logan, Ruth (Dan) Lott of Providence,
Joyce of North Salt Lake, Mont (Betty) of Bothell, Washington and Karen of Logan.
She leaves 13 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren with one on the way, and 15 great-great grandchildren with one more expected in two weeks. She enjoyed them all and was willing to sit for many five generation pictures.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings her husband and one son.
The family wishes to express many thanks for the kind care of Hospice during this last period, especially Brittney who was so helpful Also to her good neighbors, Linda and Jay Checketts and Pat Gardner and Sione Vailea, her dear Visiting Teachers Gayle Hobbs and Arlean Clark, and faithful and very helpful Home Teachers, Doug and Lisa Hinkel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan. We will honor Mother’s request for no public viewing, but friends may call 45 minutes prior to the services. Burial will be in the Downey, Idaho Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at
