Newton, Utah: Elizabeth Green Goodsell was born June 6, 1918 in Wellsville to Leroy and Elva Green. She was the fourth of six children. She spent many happy years growing up with Elmer, Leroy, Edith, Julia and Seth. The family home was in Greensville where Tom's Service is now located on the way to Wellsville. She grew up in a time without video games, cell phones or even TV. She and her family worked hard. Beth worked in the fields, milked cows and tended to the other livestock. Strawberries, beans and the ever present sugar beets needed to be hoed, topped and harvested. She attended Wellsville Elementary and South Cache High. The family pulled together when their mother’s health began to fail. Beth started making bread at age 13. Many neighbors have been a recipient of the bread without a recipe and, if they wanted, a lesson or two to learn to make their own.
She met Lawrence H. Goodsell at a dance in Wellsville. They were married in the Logan Temple on August 7, 1940. They lived in Trenton for a while and then spent the rest of their married life in Newton. Lawrence worked for the railroad for 42 years. Often leaving Beth at night during the winter months to walk the canyon as a watchman from Beaver Dam to Cache Junction to make sure the track was clear from rocks, snow slides or other dangers. They raised four children, Larry, Dianne (Pattison), Jerald and Terry. After Lawrence retired they traveled to Mexico, Hawaii, California, and got wet at Niagara Falls.
Years ago, Beth started walking around the town streets for exercise in the early morning, long before everyone was doing it. This is probably why she has enjoyed such good health. She celebrated her 75th birthday by walking five miles. She never worked outside the home. She tended a lot of the children in Newton while their Mom’s worked away from home. Many Newton adults have fond memories of her as the lady in the nursery. With her kind and loving nature, she has a special gift of sharing life with children.
