WELLSVILLE, UTAH: Ella Garrett Maughan, 86, passed away peacefully January 22, 2011 in Logan, UT. She was born to Fred Wardrop and Marie Frank Garrett on September 16, 1924 in Wellsville, UT. She was the oldest of three children. Her brothers were Fred and Keith. On September 27, 1944, she married Arnold Poppleton Maughan in the Logan LDS Temple for time and all eternity. To this union was born six children: Marie, Mark, Harrison, Rebecca, Wade, and Catherine.
Her life was filled with service to those around her. She loved music and due to this she blessed the lives of others through teaching voice, organ and piano lessons, teaching English as a second language through music at Intermountain Indian School, choral at South Cache Junior High, and substitute teaching until the age of 80 throughout the valley. She was affectionately known as “Sister Sub.”
Creating music with the Ladies Quartet, Bel Canto Choir, Northern Utah Choral Society, as the alto soloist for the Messiah with Utah State University and duets with Earl Ottley filled her life and others with joy. She conducted many choirs. Highlights included directing the Cache Valley Area MIA Chorus in the Salt Lake Tabernacle in 1966, leading the choir for the Logan Temple dedication in 1979, and conducting the Cache Children’s Choir as well as directing Wellsville City Founder’s Day choirs. She received the Wellsville City Outstanding Citizen Award in 1983 in honor of her many hours of service for the community.
In 1985-1986, she and Arnold served a mission to the Oklahoma Tulsa Mission. Other positions of service for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints included Relief Society President, Stake Music Chairman, and ward organist to name a few. She loved the gospel. She enjoyed her service with the other ladies in the Jr. Literary Club and as a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers -Peter Maughan Camp.
Those living who will miss her are her children: Marie (Bruce) Soelberg-Grantsville, Harrison (Patsy) Maughan-Wellsville, Rebecca (Del Roy) Olson-Wellsville, Wade Maughan-Wellsville, and Catherine (Van) Anderson-Grantsville, sister-in-law, Carolyn Garrett (Fred), 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred (Barbara) and Keith (Leota); son, Mark; grandsons, Douglas Bell and Brett Olson; and great-grand-daughter Abigail Sandberg.
A viewing will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Allen-Hall Mortuary located at 34 East Center, Logan, UT and prior to the services on January 28, 2011 from 10:00-11:30 am at the Wellsville Stake Center which is located at the corner of Main and Center in Wellsville. Funeral services will be held at Noon. Interment will be in the Wellsville City Cemetery. One final word from Ella, “If I can touch even one person and make their life better, then life will be well worth lived.” She has lived a full life. Let us live our lives in the same way.
