Elwood Malcom Allred

Elwood Malcom Allred, 86, passed away at home April 11, 2013. Malcom was born
October 11, 1926 in Provo, Utah, to Elwood Byron and Glendora Malcom Allred. He grew up in
Escalante, Utah; Mesa, Arizona; Shelley and Burley, Idaho, where his father was
assigned to teach seminary. After graduating from high school in Burley, Malcom joined the
Navy and served on the USS Iowa and in occupation forces in Japan during WWII.
Malcom began his career as a teacher and principal at Craigmont, Idaho. He was clever
enough to hire a girl he admired from Burley, Barbara Hall, the daughter of Horace and Leona
Hall. With no other eligible men available for miles, Barbara accepted his proposal and they
began the first of their fifty-eight years together when they were married at the Logan Temple on August 5,
1954. Their first home was in Cocolalla, Idaho, where Bruce was born. They moved to Boise
where sons Kent and Douglas were added to the family, and Malcom worked as Assistant
Superintendent of Curriculum for the State of Idaho. In 1961 he accepted a position in Logan at
Utah State University in the Department of Elementary Education where he retired as a professor
in 1989. Malcom most enjoyed teaching and interacting with his students. The last of their four
sons, Gordon, was born in Logan. Though Malcom was often a public figure serving twenty-two
years on the Logan City School Board and also as President of the Bridgerland Applied
Technology College Board, he was a private man who appreciated time with family and friends.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Malcom served in many
callings and will be remembered for his powerful teaching of gospel principles with testimony,
insight and tenderness. He and Barbara served together in the Logan Temple and as missionaries
in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.
Malcom was a true gentleman, a master of the art of kindness and courtesy. He was a
good friend, intelligent, witty, loved by children and devoted to his wife and family.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kent Everett Allred, his sister, Eldene and her
husband Steve Stites, and a great-grandchild, Joseph Gordon Allred. He is survived by his wife,
Barbara, and three sons: Bruce & Marjorie Allred of Fruit Heights, Douglas & Linda Allred of
North Logan, and Gordon & Irene Allred of Providence; twelve grandchildren and five great
grandchildren; as well as his siblings: Byron & Dolores (deceased) Allred of Preston, Idaho; Richard
& Gay Allred of Logan, and Priscilla & Dean Richins of Albion, Idaho.
There is a viewing Tuesday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34
E. Center in Logan and from 10:30 to 11 :30 a.m, on Wednesday, April 17, at the Hillcrest First
Ward, 875 North 1500 East in Logan, before the funeral service. Services begin at 12:00 p.m. with
