Evelyn Kelly Hobbs

November 1, 1921 — January 9, 2010

Evelyn Kelly Hobbs passed away early Saturday morning January 9, 2010, following a heart attack and a broken hip she suffered on December 31, 2009. She was 88 years old. Evelyn was born November 1, 1921, in Wilmington, North Carolina, the daughter of Daniel and Lorraine Kelly. She was the third of six children. Evelyn grew up in Wilmington and spent many summer months on North Carolina beaches with family and friends. She was married to Edward Lee Hobbs of Wilmington and had two children, Deborah Evelyn Hobbs and Cathy Lorraine Hobbs (Long).

As her husband’s career advanced in the railroad business, Evelyn bought and sold twenty-three (23) different residences in the following locations: Wilmington, North Carolina; Columbia, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Orlando, Florida; Houston, Texas; Raleigh, North Carolina; Birmingham, Alabama; Tampa, Florida; and once again in Birmingham, Alabama. At each new residence, she would paint, make drapes, and decorate the house in order to transform it into a home. In her later years, she lived in Auburn, Alabama, and then finally in Logan, Utah.

During her children’s growing up years, Evelyn was active in PTA as a room mother at her children’s schools. She did volunteer work at local orphanages in Houston, Texas; and she taught volunteer ceramic classes for senior citizens at St. Martin’s in the Pines in Birmingham, AL. She is survived by her two children: Dr. Deborah Hobbs and her husband Dr. Tom Shuster who reside in North Logan, UT; Dr. Cathy Long and her husband Dr. James Long who reside in Auburn, AL; and her four grandchildren: Denis Suvorov and his wife Anya who reside in Boston, MA; Jimmy Long who resides in Birmingham, AL; Nick Suvorov who resides in Salt Lake City, UT; and Kelly Long in school at Tulane Law in New Orleans, LA. According to Evelyn’s wishes, she will be cremated; and the family will hold a private memorial service. Evelyn will be warmly remembered for her love of desserts, her enthusiasm for dancing, and her fondness for wearing hats.
