LOGAN, UT - Another fiercely independent, hard-working and thrifty member of "The Greatest Generation" has passed away. On April 20, Florence P.Humphry, fourth born ofthe nine children of Anton and Frances Piesnikowski, died at age 88 in Logan Regional Hospital.
Although Florence ("Flossie" to those close to her) lived her retirement years in Utah, Providence most recently, she was never other than a New Yorker. She was born Oct. 12, 1922, in Hempstead, Long Island, and for the next 67 years lived within a few miles of there. Like so many girls of her era, following graduation from high school she spent most of WWII in support of the war effort, in her case working as a riveter at the Bethpage facility of Grumman Aircraft. From then on until her retirement from National Westminster Bank USA, she was a banker on Long Island.
With her husband, George, Florence shared a love of golf, and over the years of their marriage they travelled and played courses from coast to coast. From the famous Black Course at Bethpage to Pebble Beach in California, they played whenever possible-after work, on weekends, and during vacations. They fulfilled a lifelong dream of golf daily when they retired and moved to St. George. The Golf Channel filled the void when golfing no longer filled their days.
Florence was preceded in death by George (1997), all parents, all 8 sisters and brothers, all 5 half sisters and brothers. She is survived by her nephews and nieces-Ron W. Smith, Karen Haviland, Richard Huse, Diane Bombardi, Bethanne Piesnikowski, Nancyanne Becker, Eric Piesnikowski, Andrea Kamen, Amanda Riley, Virginia Apostolico, Charles and Robert Spuhler-and their spouses and children.
Family members express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Robert Nash and his staff as well as to the physicians, nurses, and staff at Logan Regional Hospital for their expert and sympathetic attention. To the entire emergency response team activated by a late night call to 911 on April 11, special thanks for totallv efficient and professional help when so urgently needed.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, April 30 at 5:00 P.M. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 725 South 250 East, in Hyde Park, Utah. Florence's ashes will sometime thereafter be taken to New York to be with George's at the National Cemetery in Calverton, Long Island.
