Fred W. Kiefer, Jr.

Fred William Kiefer Jr, our loving father, grandfather, brother, friend, and neighbor died peacefully July 31, 2016 surrounded by family at the home of his son Greg.
He was born in Blackfoot, Idaho on September 4, 1925, to Fred William and Ida Dolder Kiefer.
He had a happy childhood in Blackfoot and from an early age assisted his father with land surveys. He graduated from Blackfoot High School and was drafted into the Army where he served in France, Germany, and Belgium. After being discharged from the Army he began his studies in Civil Engineering at Utah State University. Upon graduation in 1950, he accepted a position at Colorado A&M in Fort Collins and received a Master’s Degree in 1953. While in Fort Collins he joined The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. In September 1955, he accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at Utah State University in Logan Utah. While working in the Civil Engineering Department he met Jolene Abel, whom he married on June 12, 1959 in the Logan LDS Temple. Together they celebrated nearly 52 years of marriage and were blessed with two children. Fred went on to earn a Ph.D. from University of California Berkeley. Fred loved teaching and taught at Utah State University for 37 years, retiring in 1992. After retiring he remained active in the engineering field.

Fred was an active member in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many calling throughout his life. Fred and Jolene served a service mission in Salt Lake for the Natural Resource section of the church and he later served at the Logan Temple.

Fred enjoyed gardening, serving others, home teaching, reading, computers, genealogy, debating politics, and spending time with the family boating and skiing.

Fred is survived by his two children, Karen Fujimoto (Blair) and Gregory Kiefer (Wendy) and 7 grandchildren, Sara, Madison, Logan, Ramsey, Rennon, Sadie, Amelia. He is also survived by his sister Clara (Ted) York. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 6 at noon at the North Logan Chapel, 1105 E. 2100 N. in North Logan. A viewing prior to the service will be held from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the North Logan Chapel. Interment will be at the Logan City Cemetery following the service.
