Fred Sharell Summers

August 28, 1932 — April 4, 2007

Fred Sharell Summers 74 of Paradise, Utah passed away
April 4, 2007 peacefully in his sleep at home. He was
born August 28, 1932 son of Fred and Caroline Summers
of Paradise. He was the oldest of five children,
growing up and living in Paradise his whole life. As
young boy Sharell learned the value of hard work.
During World War II he made money selling rabbits to
the army in Brigham City. He was a graduate of South
Cache High School.
On March 7, 1951 he married MarJean Baldwin of
Wellsville, UT, in the Logan LDS Temple. As a newlywed
he worked for the government on Second Street in Ogden
and Hill Air Force Base for seven years. They
purchased the farm in Paradise where he and MarJean
worked very hard. In the beginning he farmed and
worked part-time pouring concrete. He also worked on
the construction of Porcupine Dam. Sharell started
out farming and loved raising registered Yorkshire
hogs. His hogs were champions at many State and County
Fairs. He served as President of the Utah Swine
Producers Association for many years. He also had a
small dairy herd and stock cows. In the early 1970s
he expanded his cow/calf operation when he along with
his partners purchased the Sinkhole Ranch. This ranch
became his pride and joy and some of his happiest days
were spent in the saddle checking cattle or taking
friends and family for horse rides, especially his
highly anticipated annual horse ride. Horses became
his passion and he had a good eye for picking out the
best colts. He enjoyed backcountry pack trips every
summer; the highlights included the Mormon Pioneer
Sesquicentennial wagon train, British Columbia, and
Yellowstone wilderness with his family.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints, he served faithfully in many callings. He
served as a Home Teacher, High Councilman, Ward
Missionary, Counselor in the Young Single Adult
branch, and Bishop of the Hyrum 8th ward. He
dedicated his life to the service of God, family and
fellowmen.
His civic service included serving as President of
the Paradise Irrigation Company, Board member of the
Cache Cattlemen’s Association, Board member and
President of the Porcupine Reservoir Company, Director
of South Cache Livestock Association, Recipient of the
Master Farmer Award, President of the Paradise J.C.
Club, State Vice President and director of J.C. Club,
member of ASC Community Committee, and a member of the
Cache County Junior Livestock Sale Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, children
Vickie (Jon) White, Allan (Diane) Summers, Bryan
(Bonnie) Summers, Pam (Paul) Norman, fifteen
grandchildren, five great grandchildren, his siblings,
Edwin D. (June) Summers, Brenda (Richard) Medsker,
Scott (Barbara) Summers, Karen (Jay) Rinderknecht.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Paul
Summers, daughter, Ronda Summers, daughter in-law,
Donna M. Summers, and in-laws Luther and Ivean
Baldwin.
Sharell was always a good example, hard worker, loving
husband, loving father, and grandfather. He was a
GENTLE GIANT and will be deeply missed by all.
