Garth L Chambers

On July 19, 2013, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather returned to his Father in Heaven after a heroic battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Garth was born Sept. 2, 1929, to loving parents, DeViva Munk and Noble Langton Chambers, in Logan, Utah. He was raised in Smithfield, Utah. He was the oldest of six children. From early on he had a strong work ethic. Work was his middle name throughout his life.
Garth was a natural when it came to all sports. He was shortstop for the Smithfield Blue Sox and a pitcher for fast-pitch softball. Only a few could hit his pitches. How about horse shoes? He was the best!
Garth served in the Korean War and was stationed in Tokyo, Japan. During this time he toured parts of Japan with the Tokyo Ordinance basketball team. The Herald Journal featured an article and picture telling about his average 20 points per game.
Education was important in Garth's life. He graduated from North Cache High School. After his LDS mission and marriage, he graduated from USU. He always emphasized the importance of education to his children and grandchildren.
Garth married his sweetheart, Trilva DeAnn Thompson in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 10, 1952. They have had 60 years of wedded bliss. They were blessed with five beautiful children. He taught school at Wellsville Elementary. He loved the kids and related well to them. He always had a dairy farm on the side, and in 1976, he and DeAnn purchased a farm in Lewiston, Utah, where they resided for more than 30 years.
Scouting was always a part of his life. He has been a lifetime registered member of BSA, serving in the local unit, district and council positions. He was presented the District Award of Merit, and Silver Beaver Award. At his passing he was serving on the Trapper Trails Council Executive Board & Advisory Committee.
As an active member of the LDS Church, Garth served as Bishop, in the Stake Young Men's presidency, and countless other callings. He and DeAnn served five years in the sacred Logan Temple.
LDS missions were a priority in his life. As a young missionary, he served in the California mission, serving without purse or scrip. As a missionary couple, he and DeAnn served as CES missionaries in Finland, leadership missionaries in New Zealand, and service missionaries at the Employment Center in Logan. After selling the farm and serving their missions, they moved to Providence, and Garth helped his sons with Firehouse Pizzeria doing maintenance, ordering, delivering and supplies. Garth enjoyed driving in the wide open spaces and spending time with his beloved family. His grandchildren are his jewels and he had fun teasing and playing with them. His devotion was deep and his faith strong as an example to them. He was always found reading and studying. He prepared a document on the Apostasy. His testimony is unwavering and service was his watchword. His love for his fellow man was evident through service to others. His family and friends were greatly blessed by his example in words and deeds. He would strike up conversations with strangers and become instant friends. He so enjoyed the members of the Providence 6th Ward.
Garth is survived by his loving wife, DeAnn of Providence, and children, Annette (Kim) Rinderknecht of Vernal, Laurie (Larry) Hansen of Keizer, Oregon, Sherri (Robert) Brown of Clearfield, Greg (Kelley) Chambers of Smithfield, and Neal (Kristin) Chambers of Providence, his 21 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, and siblings Joleen (Russell) Elwood of Smithfield, Cleon (Annette) Chambers of Smithfield, DeeAnn (Lynn) Valentine of Layton, and Craig (Linda) Chambers of Smithfield. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mabel.
Special thanks to the IHC Hospice, Dr. Porter, Nurse Anna, and the many aides who gave such dedicated service and love to Garth.
Funeral services are scheduled for noon Saturday, July 27, in the Providence 6th Ward building located at 266 Canyon Rd. in Providence. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan, and 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Providence Ward. Interment will be in the Smithfield City Cemetery.
