Garth R. Low, 85 passed away on June 12th from complications of surgery. He died peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones. Garth was born on November 10, 1929 to Scott Thomas Low and Rhoda Bigelow. Because of the death of his mother at his birth, he was raised by his Uncle Gerald and Aunt Marion Low in Cardston, Alberta Canada.
He is survived by his sweetheart Lois, a son Greg (Jan) and a son David who were both from a previous marriage. He is survived by step children Tami Carter (Casey), Chuck Bassett (Stephanie), Brad Bassett (Amy) and Tennille Rasmussen (Chad). He has 5 Grandchildren and 9 Great-Grandchildren.
He was an active member of the LDS Church and filled callings faithfully. He served a church mission in New Zealand and loved the Maori People. One of his greatest joys, and one that he spoke of often was his experiences as a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. He served as a member from 1954 to 1977. If the mandatory retirement for choir members had not been started, he would have still been there today. One of his fond memories was a time that he was able to take his two sons to choir practice with him where they were able to sit in the choir seats and touch the organ. Singing was a part of his life and he would sing to anyone who would listen. Even in his last days at the hospital, he was singing to the nurses.
Other accomplishments in his life included businessman, inventor, entrepreneur, salesman, carpenter, woodworker and a skilled craftsman. He had an amazing talent of being able to look at something and knowing exactly how to put it together.
He loved his family and enjoyed teaching them to fish. He would take them skiing, golfing, hiking and horseback riding. He would horseback into the Canadian Rockies to fish and hunt. As a young boy, he received a reward for catching the biggest fish. This reward was a Fiberglass fishing pole that he was very proud of, and to this day he still owns that Fishing Pole.
He Married his sweetheart Lois on November 10, 2001 and they were later sealed in the Bountiful Temple on May 26th, 2004. He loved dancing and that is how he met Lois. Lois came to the dance for the first time with Gym Shoes on her feet, and Garth said to her “Do you really plan to dance with those”? But he took her for a spin anyway. Garth will be remembered for his sense of humor and generosity. He was respected and loved by his neighbors, friends and family.
Lois and the family would like to express thanks to neighbors who stepped up to help Garth and Lois in the last few years. They were always there to help when needed. They were especially helpful in Garth’s last few days and Lois is eternally grateful. We are, also, grateful to Ogden Regional Hospital who gave such tender care to Garth during his stay there.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 PM on Monday, June 15, 2015 in the Hyrum City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at
