WELLSVILLE - Gary Evan Draper, 71, beloved husband and father passed away Saturday, July 2,2016 at home surrounded by his family. He reunited with his loved ones after a five year battle with cancer.
He was born May 12, 1945 in Centerfield, UT to Vermile Draper and Bessie Christofferson Draper. He married Starlene Nelson on July 21, 1972 in the Logan LDS Temple. They were happily married for almost 44 years. They made their home in Logan and then Wellsville where they raised their five sons.
He graduated from Gunnison Valley High School. He attended Snow College and later graduated from USU. He served an LDS mission to the Scottish Mission from August 1964 to August 1966.
He was drafted into the Army in August 1969 at the age of 24. He served as a Military Police Sentry Dog Handler in Vietnam until 3 April 1971 when he was honorably discharged. He worked at Clearfield Cheese in Wellsville and later for the State Road Department where he retired at the age of 62.
He loved the Gospel of Jesus Christ and served in many callings in the church. He loved to attend the Temple weekly and served in the Baptistry. He loved to study the scriptures each morning. He liked to read from many books each day. He loved to hunt and fish in his younger years and later took his sons. He enjoyed driving in the mountains and took many pictures of the scenery to make his paintings. He started painting in Vietnam, and did so until one month before his passing.
He is survived by his wife Starlene and five sons, Robert, Kevin (Lisa), Mark, Darin (Cristina, fiancee) and Richard. His sisters Ielene Robinson, and Barbara (Bart) Nelson and sister-in-laws Marianne (Clair) and Nancy (Max). He was preceded in passing by his parents, Vermile and Bessie and his two older brothers, Clair and Max.
Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. on Friday, July 8, 2016 at the Wellsville Stake Center, 30 S. Center in Wellsville. A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday evening at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center in Logan and from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services at the church on Friday.
