Logan, Utah: Gary Clyde Joy passed away on 6 September 2014 at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Gary was born 24 October 1935 in Logan, Utah, to Charles William Joy and Sarah Muzzenta Bassett Joy.
Gary lived his whole life in Cache Valley starting in Wellsville and later moving to Logan when he was in the second grade. He graduated from Logan High School in 1953. Gary enjoyed his 60-year class reunion last year, mingling with old friends of times gone by.
Gary was drafted into the United States Army in September 1958, and on his first leave home, he married Helen Sherrill Seamons on 29 December 1958 in the Logan LDS Temple. After serving for two years in the Army, they returned to Logan. Soon after, they purchased the home in which they have lived for over 50 years, which was featured in the Historic Home Tour of Cache Valley last September.
Gary worked at Thiokol Corporation, the USU Computer Center, and was a firefighter for the City of Logan for over 25 years. He retired from the Logan City Fire Department in 1994.
Gary was active in civic and community organizations. He was president of the Bridgerland Lions Club and especially enjoyed the many years he served as an election judge for local, state, and national elections and interacting with the people who came into the polling station.
Gary and Sherrill joined The Towne Singers in 1986 and loved singing with this group of wonderful friends over the years. He also loved sharing his tenor voice at funerals, special programs, local nursing facilities, and family gatherings. Gary also served as the music director of the Logan LDS Seventh Ward for over forty years, teaching new songs to the congregation and leading them in weekly services.
In addition to music director, Gary also served as the Elders' Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader and teacher, and most recently as a counselor in the Logan LDS Seventh Ward bishopric with David Reynolds.
Gary loved to sing, listen to music, floral arranging, home decorating, and collecting decorations for holidays, especially Christmas.
Gary is survived by Sherrill, his wife of fifty-five years; four children, Sherry, Robert (Nadine) Joy, Brian, and Helen (David) Stoker; five special grandchildren, Jeffery, Dennis, and Kira Joy, and Samuel and Meg Stoker; his sister Beverly (David, deceased) Gancheff; his sister Ellen (James) Wagstaff, and brothers David Joy, Kelly Joy, and James (Holly, deceased) Joy.
The Joy family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Michael Stones and his staff, the IHC hospital staff in Murray, The Huntsman Cancer Center of Logan, Dr. Sarah Cologna and the "VA" oncology and pharmacy staff, IHC Home Care staff, Access Home Care and Hospice staff, and the staff of Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their loving and gentle care.
He truly lived up to his name, bringing joy to all who knew him. He always will be the "joy" in our lives.
