George Dean Mortensen

July 9, 1926 — January 31, 2010

Logan, Utah: George Dean Mortensen, surrounded by loved ones here, peacefully returned to the loving arms of his family and loved ones in heaven on January 31, 2010. He was born July 9, 1926 to Agnes Rebecca (Becky) Jacobsen and Jorgen Peter Mortensen, a true Danishman through and through. He was welcomed in to this world by older sisters and brothers LeOra, Wally, Marie, Emery, and Bob, with Violet coming along a few years later.
Dad loved his brothers and sisters and their families. In fact, he loved everyone, truly. He learned how to work and serve at an early age at home and with the family’s Natural Ice business. Attending River Heights, South Cache high school, and spending time at Utah State Agricultural College, Dad acquired many skills and friends. Pvt. 1st class Mortensen served in the Army during World War II in the Phillipines and Japan. He attributed his, and his siblings safe return from the war to the devoted prayers of a good mother.
Dad was an auto mechanic and then a painting contractor most of his life, traveling all over with his faithful crew to paint tabernacles, churches, barns, and really anything that would stand still.
“One time I was painting a place out on north main. There was a pretty little girl there named Zella Hansen.” Dad and Mom were married in 1954. Soon there was little Teena to join them. Nine years later April, then Jim, then Tressa came along. What a great Dad, taking time with us, taking us in the camper to Yellowstone, Canada, California, Arizona, and everywhere along the way. Dad loved everyone and loved to help everyone he could. He would do this simultaneously while fishing, teaching the gospel, painting, doing a magic show, loving his kids and grandkids, and just by being there. We will miss his unfailing positive outlook and love.
Dad was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Logan 14th ward, serving in numerous capacities. He loved the scriptures, he loved bringing the gospel to anyone he could.
After a long and well-fought battle with heart and memory problems, he has now joined the ranks of heaven where he will be having a joyful reunion with his Mom, Dad, Sisters LeOra and Marie, Brothers Wally, Emery, and beloved Bob, along with many other friends and loved ones. He leaves behind many who have loved him, Zella, a sister and brother-in-law Violet (Bud “my best friend”) Draper, a sister-in-law Luana Mortensen, a brother-in-law Karl Weaver, children Teena (Bruce) Cook, April Mortensen, James Dean (Yanisa) Mortensen, Tressa (Kent) Haderlie, and grandchildren Aaron (Beth), Natalie, Cameron Dean (serving in the Barcelona Spain mission), Lauralee, Ashley, Maranda, and Brandon.
Thank you so much to James, who has watched over Dad so well and stayed with us when we needed him. Thank you to Kathy, Scott, and the staff at Williamsburg, to Dr. Spunzar, to his doctors and to Alice and Grace at the VA for their abiding kindness and support.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, February 5, 2010 in the North Logan 4th Ward Chapel, 1650 East 2600 North, North Logan. A viewing will be held Thursday, February 4, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah prior to services at the church from 10:30-11:30 AM.
