Gordon Mark Maughan Md

November 16, 1922 — October 29, 2015

Gordon Maughan was born in a log cabin in Huntsville, Utah during a winter storm and died in San Pedro, California on a beautiful, sunny morning. He lived in his house in Palos Verdes Estates from 1959 until his passing.
He was valedictorian of his class at Preston High School in Preston, Idaho and then attended Brigham Young University, where he met his wife Jean (née Stoddard); the couple was married on March 29, 1943 in the Salt Lake City temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He served in the US Navy from 1944-46, then attended the University of California, Berkeley (BS); University of California, San Francisco (MD); the University of Oregon (OB/GYN).
In 1956 he and four other doctors started the Redondo Beach Medical Group. He was certified in obstetrics and gynecology, delivering several thousand babies. Academically, he was invited to be a part-time instructor at Harbor UCLA, teaching medical students and assisting residents with surgeries.
After 32 years of practicing medicine, he retired to serve with Jean as missionaries for the LDS church. He and Jean then worked in the Los Angeles temple for ten years, and he also held many leadership positions in the church throughout his life.
A charter member of the Palos Verdes Tennis Club, being the first one to present a check for its formation, he was an avid, lifelong tennis player, winning many medals and trophies. Gordon took delight in helping others, both with money and with service. Family was number one, and his favorite song was “Love at Home.”
He is survived by his children, Mark (Elizabeth) Maughan; Marilyn (Stewart) Crozier; Gwendolyn (M. Douglas) Larsen; and Sue Carolyn (Michael) Smith; 22 grandchildren (Gordon highly valued education, so he was very proud that many of them have obtained postgraduate degrees); and 35 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Humanitarian Services c/o LDS Philanthropies, Joseph Smith Memorial Building, 15 E. South Temple St. #2E, Salt Lake City, UT 84150.
