Grant M. Mathews

Grant Malmberg Mathews, Beloved Husband, Devoted Father, Grandfather and Great Grandfather, and Cherished Friend passed away September 10th at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray.

Grant was born March 12, 1934 to Grant Leon and Jennie Malmberg Mathews Just 10 days after his birth, Jennie passed away due to problems resulting from childbirth. Subsequently his father married Jennie's sister, Anna, who lovingly raised and cared for Grant.

Providence became his home, and he gained his love of horses from spending childhood years exploring the mountains and fields with friends. He was also taught to work hard and enjoy every beautiful creation as he spent his growing up years there.

Grant attended Providence Elementary, and South Cache High School where he was active in student government and served as Student Body President from 1951-1952. His love of sports took him to Utah State where he played Freshman Basketball and enjoyed boxing.

The greatest blessing of his life came when he married his High School Sweetheart, Peggy Olsen from Young Ward, in the Logan Temple. She has been the light and joy of every day for Grant and they would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on September 18th.

Because of a serious accident at the age of 15, he has lived with pain every day, but he never complained and showed by example that every day was a great day. He could always see blessings in this life and has had an amazing influence in the lives his posterity from his positive attitude.

Work experience took him from Logan to Bountiful to work for Cudahy Packing Company. He was a hard worker and had a fun personality and they quickly promoted him in the company. He was transferred to Sacramento, California where they lived for 2 1/2 years, but were thrilled when the opportunity came to move back to Bountiful. Just a year later, Grant got an opportunity to buy a potato farm in Grace, Idaho, with his brother Dean, which was a dream for him. Grant and Peggy moved their family there and spent 17 wonderful years raising their children. They returned to Cache Valley, where he began working with Century 21 as a realtor and a general contractor building new homes. It was such a joy in his life to see families gain their dream of owning a beautiful home.

He lived with the motto that the most important thing in life is the way we treat people. He truly followed the example of the Savior to love as He did. This accounted for the many friends that blessed life.

Church service was always a great joy to Grant. He loved the youth, and had cherished experiences with the Priest Quorum. He served as a counselor and Bishop of Williams Ward in Grace, Idaho for a total of almost 14 years. How he loved the people in his ward! After moving back to Cache Valley, he served on the High Council, loved studying the scriptures and taught Primary, Gospel Doctrine, and was currently serving as a High Priest Quorum Instructor. He loved the 17 wonderful years he was blessed to serve in the baptistery in the Logan Temple.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Dennis and Dean Mathews, his sister, Jenny Fishbaugh, and grandson, Scott Mathews Lemon.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy, his children, Blake and Patti Mathews - Centerville, Susan and Lynn Lemon -, Providence, Diane and Kai Hintze - serving in El Salvador, Darin and Andrea Mathews - Evanston, Wyoming, and Steve Mathews - Salt Lake City, 23 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Lynn and Tama Mathews, and sister Hilda and Blaine McBride, sister-in-laws, Katie Mathews and Leslie Mathews, and brother-in-law, Bill Fishbaugh, and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Monday, September 15th, from 6-8 pm at Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan, and Tuesday, September 16th prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:30 am at the church. Funeral services will be at Noon in the Lundstrom Park 1st Ward, 1260 North 1600 East, Logan.
