Greta Toombs

August 2, 1935 — July 3, 2013

Greta Fransson Toombs, 77, passed away peacefully in her sleep July 3, 2013 after a valiant battle with multiple health issues. She was born August 2, 1935 in Gavle, Sweden, the daughter of a Norwegian mother and Swedish father. A major turning point in her life occurred when at the age of sixteen she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
While attending a linger-longer after church she met her future love, Marlin Toombs of
Benson, Utah who was serving a mission for the LDS Church in Sweden. After corresponding in Swedish by mail for 18 months, and knowing not a word of English; Greta courageously immigrated by boat to the United States on August 7, 1954. She and Marlin were united together in marriage in the Logan LDS Temple, October 21, 1954, while Marlin was on a 10 day furlough from the US Army. That was followed by 57 eventful years together. She learned English in her new homeland by listening to basketball games and memorizing jingles from the radio. This education left her with a lifelong skill of having a song to sing for just about any occasion.
She was a loving, devoted mother and is survived by her husband Marlin Toombs, their 6 children and spouses: Jerry (Betsy) Toombs, Jay Toombs, Anita (Scott) Porath, Marina (Chris) Mitton, Randy (Shelly) Toombs, Corey (Anita) Toombs. She was a doting grandmother and lived to see her family grow to 33 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Greta's home was a place of refuge to them all.
Known for her ease of conversation with even total strangers, Greta possessed a wit and humor that brought happiness to all who knew her. She loved spending time '!'lith her family and was usually the life of the party. With a real zest for life, Greta loved to read non-fiction, travel, have lunch with her girlfriends, ride her bike, spoil her grandchildren, and had taken bargain shopping to a professional level.
Greta worked for 10 years as the Nursery Coordinator for the Logan High School unwed mothers program. Throughout her life she had an unwavering faith in God and actively served in her church: as a Primary worker for 23 years, teaching Relief Society at the Sunshine Terrace for 10 years and in the Relief Society presidency of the Logan 3rd Ward. She was a skilled cook and so many have found pleasure in her delicious homemade bread, traditional Swedish pancakes, cinnamon rolls and gingerbread cookies as well as fantastic peanut brittle.
Greta lived a life of service to her family, community, church and friends. She was a woman of faith with a strong testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ. As the heart of the Toombs family she has shaped them all with her example of honesty, selfless love, sacrifice and devotion to family and God. She was deeply loved, and she will be deeply missed until that blessed day when we will be together again.
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
