Gwen Summers was born on July 28, 1951 in Montpelier, Idaho. Her parents were Gerald Amos Hulme and Virginia Irwin Jackson. Her childhood was filled with one adventure after another that helped her develop the grit and character that she has been known for throughout her life. Gwen and her siblings moved many times between different areas in Northern Utah during their childhood. They eventually settled in the Avon/Paradise area in Cache County which is where she met her husband, Vaughn. They spent the next 56 years together in Avon and Paradise and were together until her very last breath. Gwen and Vaughn had five children: Amy Davis (Jeff Davis), Robert Summers (Kamee Hall Summers), Natalie Cook (Tony Cook), Steven Summers (Melissa Oliver Summers), and Michael Summers (Lindsay Kendrick Summers). She had fifteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Gwen held many callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Although Gwen was at times irreverent, she had a strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ that could match the creedal certitude of the most devout saint. Gwen worked at Budge Clinic Pediatrics until she retired. Both patients and coworkers grew to love her during that time and many called her by the nickname “Grandma Gwen”. Gwen and Vaughn spent their few years of retirement riding horses and hunting as much as they could, doing yard work, gardening, and caring for the home that they built together. It seemed like nothing could slow her down or break her spirit.
When Gwen's family and friends think of her, they are flooded with memories of the adventures she took them on including but not limited to: hunting in Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho; ATV rides; skiing; horse rides anywhere the horses could pack her; and BB gun shootouts. Adventures with Gwen were often tense but always made for good storytelling once the dust (or snow) had settled. She loved hunting big game with a bow, muzzleloader, and rifle. She chose to decorate her home with some of the animals that she had hunted as they brought back some of her fondest memories. Hunting was a major part of her life and defended her opportunities to do so. She managed to fit it into her everyday activities while she was a stay at home mom. She kept a gun in the laundry room so she could shoot pheasants in the garden while she tended to other household duties and once managed to shoot a couple of predatory stray dogs off of the back porch during her sister's baby shower.
Gwen is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren, which is kind of a miracle considering some of their adventures together. She was never too worried about settling for the safest option in any given situation. She was always up for adventure and we know that her spirit is now free to go on whatever adventure she would like, but she will be waiting for Dad. We know that she is on the other side with Mini-Me all saddled up waiting for Dad and Kate so they can continue the adventure that started 56 years ago.
