Helen Mae Adams Champ, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on June 8th, 2017 at her home for the past three years, Terrace Grove.
Helen was born on April 25th, 1927 to Ancel Ted and Lola Belle Hoofnagle Adams on their farm in Star Idaho, by a veterinarian. She was well protected, being the only girl on the farm with nine men living there, who didn’t even let her have a bicycle until she was fifteen!
She attended public schools in Boise. After going to Boise Junior College, now Boise State University, Helen worked as an Executive Secretary to R.J. McCaslin Lumber Company, where she was the de facto manager during times when McCaslin was on-sight at his eight lumber yards throughout the west. While working in Boise, she was also a member of Business & Professional Women, Boise, Idaho.
She met and fell in love with George Herbert “Herb” Champ, who was managing the Boise branch of his family’s Utah Mortgage Loan Corporation. They were married in 1952 and moved to Logan, Utah in 1956 where Herb was from and where he would later become CEO.
Their marriage was one of love, support, and partnership. Helen loved to host large parties for their wide group of friends and business contacts.
Helen’s favorite pastime was playing cards, especially with her longtime best friend and bridge partner, Ruth Neuhold.
Helen was an active part of the Logan community. She especially loved her service with Tri-Delta Sorority, Utah State University, where she served as President of the Alumni Advisors. She enjoyed her time and relationships formed at A.C. Women’s Club, Logan Study Guild, Clara Barton Chapter of Eastern Star, the Ladies Organization of Logan Golf & Country Club, and Logan Dance Club. Helen was baptized at St. John’s Episcopal Church with her oldest child, Tere, and remained a lifelong member. In 2015, Herb and Helen were awarded USU’s Spirit of Old Main Award for their lifetime service and dedication to the university.
Helen and Herb spent over thirty winters in Palm Desert, California where they enjoyed the beautiful weather, went out to lunch daily, and were visited by their family.
Helen loved spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards, taking them out to lunch, and teaching them to smell the flowers. She also helped secure their freedom by teaching them to slide down the stairs as toddlers, and when they were teenagers, how to drive.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Tere Champ-Major (Rick Major), their children, Charles and Nicholas; her son, George F. Champ and his children Adam, Katie, and Sarah; brother, Richard (Patsy) Adams, and their daughter, Stefanie; brother Robert Adams, his children, Matt (Michelle), and Mali (Bill) McGehee, and their families;
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Champ.
A reception and celebration of Helen’s life will be held at Logan Golf and Country Club (one of Helen’s favorite lunch spots in Logan) on Friday, June 16th from 5:00-7:00 PM, located at 710 N 1500 E. A graveside burial service will be held at Logan Cemetery on Saturday, June 17th at 2:00 PM.
Helen’s family extends warm thanks to all who cared for her at Terrace Grove, Layna May and her family, including Helen’s adopted sixth grandchild Suzie, the caregivers from Right At Home, and the excellent care of Dr. Michael J. Stones. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts are encouraged to the Sunshine Terrace Foundation, 209 W 300 N, Logan, UT 84321 or St. John’s Episcopal Church (memo line: Helen Champ Memorial Fund), 85 E 100 N, Logan, UT 84321.
