Howard Myron Carlisle
Howard Myron Carlisle, prominent educator and noted author, died November 21, 2011 of age related causes. He was born in Salt Lake City on September 30, 1928. His parents, Myron C. Carlisle, and Hazel Checketts Carlisle, moved the family to Logan in 1934 where he lived most of his professional life serving as a USU professor of business and an author. He first wrote two business texts (both revised) and later seven others, primarily biographies of Utah business leaders.
He attended Logan City schools obtaining a bachelor’s degree from Utah State Agricultural College with Phi Kappa Phi Honors. He attended graduate schools at the University of Wisconsin and the University of California (Berkeley). He then worked five years for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in Berkeley and another five years in Brigham City for Thiokol Chemical Corporation helping develop the Minuteman missile.
In August 1963, he decided to return to academia, and accepted a position as an assistant professor in the College of Business at USAC. During the next 25 years he received many honors. He was chairman of the Department of Business Administration for 20 years, chairman of the USU Department Heads annual conference for 11 years, authored the two texts for SRA publishers, wrote a book for the American Management Association, and published numerous articles. He presented Utah State University's 54th Faculty Honor Lecture in the humanities in 1977. In 1988 he was selected by the Honors Student Society to give the university’s thirteenth Honorary Last Lecture prior to taking early retirement.
After retiring from USU, he taught two academic years as a visiting professor of management at Washington State University. His ultimate goal was to devote more time to writing, fly fishing and travel. His final honor from the University was as a recipient of a Distinguished Service Award presented March 7, 2000, at the Founder’s Day ceremonies held in the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City.
Howard and Colleen traveled extensively throughout their life. One of the many rewarding experiences was celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at Pebble Beach (likely his favorite place in the world) with their four children and spouses which was a bonding experience never to be forgotten.
Howard married Janice Baugh on June 21, 1950, the year they both received bachelor degrees from Utah State University. While living in Berkeley, she gave birth to a son (Richard). She died on November 13, 1954. Howard met Colleen Boss Williams during the spring of 1956. Their courtship resulted in their marriage on December 18th of the same year. In addition to Richard (Debbie) the couple had three other children: Julie Robinson (Kerry), Jana Lou Kuhn (Jeffrey) and Michael (Michelle). The four children added 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren to his posterity. Howard is also survived by his mother-in-law Carmen Boss. He was preceded in death by his parents, Myron and Hazel Carlisle and sister, Marian Preston.
