Howard Norman Smith was born April 9, 1923 in Taunton, Massachusetts, to Howard Norman Smith Sr. and Alice Lee Fairbanks. In 1925, his parents relocated with their two children, Howard and Miriam, to Pasadena, California, where Howard spent his childhood years. He married Betty L. Faust in 1945 and began their family in the San Fernando area. In 1957, they moved to Santa Ana, and then to Garden Grove in 1967. Howard married Mary L. Welch in 1974. They relocated to Wellsville, Utah in 1979 after his retirement, where they lived many years until 2005. Howard then married Gloria Goddard, spending the last six months of his life in Santa Barbara, California, until his death on April 24, 2006, at the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife of 3 months, Gloria Goddard Smith, of Santa Barbara, CA and his four children: Howard N. Smith Jr. (Magi) of Ridgecrest, CA; Susan L. Cito (Gary) of Hacienda Heights, CA; Craig L. Smith (Annette) of Logan, UT; and Sally L. Haymond (Gary) of Landers, CA. Howard was proud to have served in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was a decorated soldier and POW in Nazi Germany, receiving two Purple Hearts. He worked as an Industrial Engineer for ITT Cannon Electric for 38 years until his retirement in 1979. He enjoyed model railroading, stamp collecting, raising tropical fish, Hollywood classic movies, family vacations and spending time with his children. He loved sharing his stories and his humor. He will be greatly missed by us all.
