Irena Skujins (Vizulis) passed away peacefully on June 19,2009. She was born December 20, 1926 in Rezekne, Latvia to parents Henrich and Salomeja Vizulis. During WWII, she trained and worked as a nurses' aid at a childrens' hospital in Holland. The time she spent living in Holland and helping infirm children was one of the most fulfilling and happy times of her life. After WWII she and her family immigrated to the US. She married John Skujins in 1955 in Berkeley, California and they were later divorced. Their two sons were born in California prior to the family's move to Logan Utah in 1969. She was active in USU faculty womens' and foreign student wives' organizations, teaching participants homemaking and craft skills. Following her divorce, her passion for cooking led to her opening the Center Street Restaurant with several partners. Along with the restaurant venture she enjoyed giving cooking lessons to young people, friends and acquaintances in her home. Her long association with the Cache Valley Chamber Music group allowed her to enjoy their performances and participate in post-concert celebrations.
Irena was preceded in death by a younger brother and younger sister, and is survived by her two sons, Andrejs and Juris.
