Irene J. Maughan
Irene James Maughan, 85, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 at the Logan Regional Hospital of causes incident to age. She was born on February 25, 1924 in Paradise, Utah to David Wilmer and Irva Price James. She was the first of five children. She spent a very happy childhood growing up in Paradise on the family farm surrounded by grandparents and many cousins. She graduated from South Cache High School in 1942 and then went to work in Ogden at the American Can Co.
Irene married Russell Jay Maughan, of North Logan, on February 5, 1943 in the Logan Utah Temple. They made their home in North Logan and she lived in the same house for over 50 years. Russell died suddenly on January 30, 1964 of a heart attack, leaving Irene to raise and support 6 children. She decided to enroll at Utah State University and there she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Upon graduating from USU, she taught in the Cache County School District for 19 years. Her ability to teach and love the children in her classroom was unmatched.
Irene’s served in many church callings, including the Sunday School, YWMIA, and the Relief Society. Her favorite calling was serving for 12 years as an officiator in the Logan Temple. She said it was the ‘ultimate’.
Irene’s life revolved around her children and grandchildren. She loved spending time with them and planning the next family reunion or get together.
Irene is survived by her six children; Jeanie (Tim) Davis of Paradise, UT; Marilyn Maughan of Salt Lake City, UT; Jay (Phyllis) Maughan of Cedar City, UT; Kory (Kristen) Maughan| of Story City, IA; Connie (Roger) Welsh of Hyde Park, UT; and Craig (Serena) Maughan of Nibley, UT; 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Gordon (Nancy) James of Lehi, UT and a sister, Carol (Dan) Bowen of Pocatello, ID. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, David Winston James, formerly of River Heights, UT; a sister Marion Smith of West Jordan, UT and a brother-in-law Sherrod Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 in the Hyde Park Stake Center, 535 East 200 South, Hyde Park. Friends and family may call from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Monday evening at the Allen Mortuary of North Logan, 420 East 1800 North in North Logan, and prior to services on Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 AM at the church. The family would like to thank Dr Steven Salisbury for his kind and loving care of mother over the years and especially the past two weeks. She resided at Legacy House for the past 4 years and was cared for by many employees there. Alpine Hospice also provided tender-loving care.
