VAN VALAIRE MILLER
Ivan Valaire Miller, 96, of Hyrum passed away peacefully on January 30, 2014. He was born January 29, 1918 to Lester L. and Minnie Andreasen Miller in Hyrum. He attended Lincoln Elementary and graduated from South Cache High School, and attended BYU for one year before serving an LDS mission in England. Ivan married Ruth Nelson of Great Falls, MT in the Logan Temple on January 29, 1941, celebrating 71 years together before Ruth’s passing in 2012. They are survived by their six children: Marsha (Dennis)Thompson of Smithfield, Susan (Bob) Stockwell of Minot, ND; Jeffrey (Bonnie) Miller of Bountiful, Steven (Joni) Miller of Hyrum, Rosemarie (Brad) Johnson of Providence, and Jeanette (Mark) Petersen of Bountiful. They have 31 grandchildren, 74 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
Ivan learned the value of hard work at a very early age working side by side with his father, Lester and his brother, Max, as they established L.L. Miller and Sons, later to be known as Tri-Miller Packing Company. They also owned a transport company that complemented the meat business. In 1982 they built a truck stop in Plymouth, UT, that Ivan managed. He also served as president of the Independent Meat Packers of Utah and as a member of the Agricultural Advisory board for the state of Utah.
Serving as mayor of Hyrum from 1954 to 1958 Ivan was instrumental in having the old City Hall renovated, laying a new pipeline for the city water, and starting the first volunteer fire department. He always took great pride in his community and was actively involved in projects that improved it. Many will remember him watering the trees on Main Street.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ivan loved serving the Lord in many capacities. He enjoyed working with the young men in the Explorer program, directed a young men’s chorus and held many ward and stake callings. He and Ruth served in the London South mission and as President and Matron of the Logan Temple from 1990 to 1993.
Ivan and Ruth created a warm and loving home and made everyone feel welcome. The grandkids always headed straight for Grandpa’s “secret” candy drawer. He loved to take them fishing and kept them captivated by telling bear stories and doing fun projects. Ivan was a remarkable man, kind, selfless, honest, generous, without guile and humble. We miss you, Dad.
