J. Monroe Jenson

MILLVILLE -- J. Monroe Jenson, 91, passed away peacefully June 8, 2014. Born December 8, 1922, in Millville, he was the son of Merle Garr and John Martin Jenson. He was a member of South Cache High School class of 1941 and enjoyed playing in the band.
He served in the armed forces during World War II, attending boot camp at Camp Abbott, Oregon. After boot camp, he was assigned to be a draftsman with a corps of engineers in the far eastern air force. This assignment took him from Australia to many islands of the south Pacific and finally to Tokyo.
Monroe studied landscape architecture and education at Utah State Agricultural College and received a degree in elementary education. The fourteen years of his career were spent teaching fourth & fifth grades at the Floradell Elementary School in Wellsville. His students particularly remember his art lessons. During this time, he also served as the president of the Utah Mental Health Association.
Later, he returned to Utah State to pursue a degree in speech pathology and spent the rest of his employment with the Cache County School District as a speech therapist.
He married Iris Chamberlain October 3, 1946, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
After the death of his first wife, he married Patricia Pitcher Andrews in 1989 and enjoyed traveling extensively with her. They were later divorced.
As an active member of the LDS Church Monroe served in the MIA and Sunday School and was the ward librarian. He enjoyed art, theater, music, and gardening. He was known in the south end of the valley for his sweeping beds of spring tulips.
His family will be forever grateful for his examples of kindness, industry, and provident living. He will be greatly missed – most especially by his best friend, favorite dancing partner, faithful companion of 49 years, his youngest daughter, Deanna.
He is survived by his daughters, Penny and Deanna Jenson; his son J. Paul (Jennifer) Jenson; and his grandsons, McCade, Hayden, and Riley Jenson; all of Millville.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Rhea Jenson Larsen and Opal Jenson Naylor; his wife Iris, and son John Francis Jenson.
The Jenson family extends deep gratitude to Doctor Salisbury and the CNS hospice team, as well as private aides, friends, and neighbors who all cheered Monroe immensely and helped him remain in his home until the end of his life.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, June 13, at the Millville Ward Chapel, 110 S. Main. Viewings will be held at the church,Thursday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. and Friday from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Millville Cemetery.
