James W. Hunt, 71, passed away from natural causes May 10, 2016 at home in Logan Ut. Born April 12, 1945 in Oakland, CA. Jim graduated from Vallejo High School in 1963, and joined the Air Force. While stationed at Travis Air Force Base he met and married Nina Swartzfager in 1965. They were blessed with two sons. After serving his Country, Jim worked for the Veterans Affairs Dept. and later became County Commissioner in Clarion, Pennsylvania. Most notable achievements while in office included acquiring funding for a long term health facility in Clarion and he oversaw the completion of The American Golf Hall of Fame in Foxburg, PA.
Jim moved his family to Logan in 1978 to again live by his childhood friend, Tom Weyerts (Freda). While raising a family during his career, his love of baseball inspired him to volunteer for 30 years with the Cache Valley Pony Baseball Association. As league director he organized the league, created schedules and managed many successful State, District and Regional Pony tournaments. He was Logan Softball Association President, he umpired, coached and was a Sports Editor for The Cache Citizen. He passed his love of baseball to his sons and grandchildren. He has loved to watch them play throughout the years.
2003 to present Jim has been a committee member of the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame and has researched and written 166 athlete inductee biographies. Jim was excited to learn that he himself was to be inducted in March 2017.
Jim was loved and will be missed by family and friends in both Cache Valley and the California Bay area.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Elton and Paula Hunt; He is survived by two sons, James (Loy Ann), Matthew (Rebecca) 6 grandchildren, Bradford, Megan, Jarrett, Lexi, Jordan and Aivon. Jim is also survived by his former wife and friend, Nina Hunt of Logan and a sister, Barbara Kinberger (James) of Stinson Beach CA.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan. A viewing will be held on Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, and prior to the services on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Condolences and memories may be shared online at
