James O. Adams

Hyrum - James Othella Adams, 90, our loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 16, 2008 .

He was born July 31, 1917 , in Thatcher, Utah , to Dennis Earl and Rosa Christiansen Adams.

He attended school in Box Elder County, graduating from Bear River High School in 1935, and from Utah State University in 1948. He completed two years of graduate study at BYU.

For 35 years he was a teacher and administrator in the LDS Seminary and Institute program, fulfilling seminary assignments at Snake River Seminary in Moreland , Idaho , Millard Seminary in Fillmore, and Bountiful Seminary. In 1960 he was assigned to Hyrum Seminary where he was principal for four years, then Smithfield Seminary where he was principal for 14 years. He retired in 1984 after five years as administrative assistant to the area director.

In addition to his professional work for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he devoted his life to serving in many callings including Bishop, High Counselor, teacher, home teacher, music director, and temple officiator in the Logan LDS Temple . As a young man he served a mission in Eastern Canada and later with his wife in the Ohio Akron Mission. He proudly served his country in the Armed Forces for 40 months during World War II.

Jim was well known for his love of gardening; he loved to see the results of his labors in bottles on shelves, and enjoyed canning with or without help. His neighbors, children, and grandchildren were the recipients of his productivity and generosity.

On March 5, 1948 , he married the love of his life, LaRae Hatton in the Logan LDS Temple . Together they reared seven children.

Survived by his wife LaRae, children Linda (Mike) Weighall, Bakersfield, CA, Joel (Kathy) Adams, St. George; Ken (Elaine) Adams, Sandy; Jill (Larry) Burnett, Mesa, AZ; Chris (Barney) Olsen, Cottonwood Heights; Janice (Kent) Griffiths, Lawrenceville, GA; and son-in-law Larry (Kathy) Pease, Salt Lake City, as well as 26 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Also survived by siblings Florence Sommers, Riverside , UT ; Juanita Howell, Santa Clara , CA ; Dean (Joyce) Adams , Bountiful ; Reed (Verlyn) Adams, Tremonton; Grant Adams, Garland ; and sister-in-law, Evelyn Adams, Yuma , AZ.

Preceded in death by daughter Carol Pease, granddaughters Ashley Pease and Eleisha Griffiths, brothers Golden and Eldon Adams, and sister, Lucille Walters.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 22, at 12:00 noon in the Hyrum 5th Ward Chapel, 90 West Main Street . Friends and family may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center Street in Logan , and from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Hyrum 5th Ward Chapel on Saturday. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery . Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net .
