Jean Holmes Maughan (1924-2013)
HYRUM, UTAH: Jean Holmes Maughan, 88, died on Monday, February 25, 2013 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born 23 August 1924, at Ogden, UT, the 11th and last child of William Holmes and Mary Evelean Childs Holmes. Jean’s mother died when Jean was about 9 months old. Due to various other difficult events, Jean was taken to live at an orphanage when she was about 4 or 5 and then later lived in various foster homes until her oldest sister gained custody of her. Through these challenging circumstances, Jean developed the beautiful skills of keeping a positive attitude, and forging ahead when life gets tough. Jean met her future husband at a dance (which she loved to do) and she married Louis Allen Maughan on 25 January 1947. They spent all their married life in Hyrum, where they enjoyed the companionship of many good friends. Lou and Jean owned Allen Mercantile grocery store in Hyrum for many years, until they retired in the 80’s. After retiring, they began to spend winters in St. George. Lou died in 1999, and Jean decided to move South full time. She bought a house in Rio Virgin estates and made many wonderful friends during the ten years she lived there. She served as a missionary, for several years, at the missionary call center in St. George, which brought her much joy. Due to ill health, Jean finally had to leave St. George, and moved back to Cache Valley, where she lived at Williamsburg Assisted Living for a year. She made her final move to Idaho Falls where she made her home with her son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Jan Maughan, for the past 21 months. Jean loved being a mother and grandmother.
Besides her husband Louis, Jean was preceded in death by two grandsons, Mark and David Leiser, and son-in-law Gene Larson. She is survived by her children, step-daughter, Barbara Larson of Hawaii, son, Allen (Jan) Maughan of Idaho Falls, son, Dan Maughan of Logan, Utah, 16 beloved grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren. She is also survived by 2 sisters-in-law/friends, Flora Obray of Paradise and Arlene Liechty of Salt Lake City. As well as many cherished nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention but you know who you are! Thanks also to our daughter, Ellen. Without your daily help with grandma we couldn’t have made it through the last few months.
We will miss you Mom, Grandma, but we know you go with God.
