Jeanne D Smith

March 29, 1942 — January 28, 2023

Jeanne Smith passed away January 28, 2023 at her home surrounded by her family. Her death came only three days after the death of her beloved husband Art Smith.

Norma Jean Dent “Jeanne” was born on March 29, 1942 in Salt Lake City to Norma Jean D. McDonald and Harold Joseph Dent. She was the second child and only daughter of 4 children. When she was little, Jeanne and her family moved to New York. She held many fond memories of visiting the Zoo, ice skating at Rockefeller Square and climbing the Empire State building. Eventually her family moved to Kansas City where they lived briefly before settling back in Salt Lake City. During the summers Jeanne would visit her grandparent’s sheep ranch in Cedar City, where she enjoyed getting into all sorts of mischief.

Jeanne graduated from Olympus High School in Salt Lake at the age of 16, shortly after graduation, she married Dallon Day and had two children, Daniel and Kathleen. They later divorced.

While raising two small children and working at Cottonwood hospital, Jeanne was in need of a loan. Her mother told her to go talk to a nice loan officer named Arthur Smith. Jeanne said she always dreamed of meeting her “Knight in Shining Armor”-Art turned out to be just that. They were married in 1966. They became an instant family of 8. Art had 6 children from his first marriage, Norris, Melanie, Derek, Kevin, Leslie and Stephanie. Together they had 3 more children, Nathan, Wendee, and Sidney.

The family lived in Logan and Providence before settling into a home in Hyrum. Jeanne and Art spent the next 44 years raising their 3 children together and later reveling in the blessings of their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jeanne worked as a beautician in her early twenties. After moving to Cache Valley, she worked for many years as a secretary at Utah State University. She decided to go back to school and received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Jeanne taught 5th grade for several years before retiring in 2006. Her favorite retort to her pupil’s unnecessary questions was, “Didn’t I tell you? Then you didn’t need to know.”

After retirement, Jeanne and Art spent the majority of their time fixing up a rustic cabin they purchased in Idaho. There they hosted many holiday gathering and family reunions, filling the home with many happy memories that are cherished today by all who attended.

Jeanne is survived by her 10 children, Norris, Melanie Elizondo (Jack), Derek (Donna), Kevin (Jennifer), Leslie Salas (Mike), Stephanie Olsen (Cordell), Kathy Nielsen (Tracy), Nate (Rebecca), Wendee, and Sid (Carlee). Along with 32 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and her twin brothers David and Doug.
She is preceded in death by her husband Art, her parents, and her son Daniel.
