“GRANDMA HONEY”
On the snowy evening of December 1, 2007, Jean Nielsen Read left the loving arms of her son and daughters and passed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father and those who were waiting for her. She had just celebrated her ninetieth birthday on October 22, 2007.
Jean was born to Edgar and Delarma Monson Nielsen in Hyrum, Utah, the fourth of ten brothers and sisters.
She attended Lincoln School and South Cache High School, graduating in 1936. She attended Brigham Young University on a music scholarship, where she graduated with a BS in Elementary Education in 1940.
In the fall of 1940 she accepted a teaching position at Trenton Elementary. While teaching in Trenton she met and later married Doyle Linden Read on May 15, 1942 in Whitney Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple. Doyle passed away in July of 1999.
Jean followed Doyle into the service, joining him in Camp Cook California. They were later transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington, where they remained until the end of WW II.
They returned to Trenton where they made a home and raised their three children.
Jean was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints holding many ward and stake callings. She was member of The Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
In 1957 Jean returned to teaching first and second grades at Trenton Elementary until its closing in1967. She then taught first grade at Summit Elementary until she retired in 1986.
After Jean retired she began oil painting. Her paintings grace the homes of her children, grandchildren, and friends.
She is survived by her children, Janis Crookston, Alan Read, Rebecca (Don) Wadsworth, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and four step-great grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Venice Barr; four brothers; Lee (Athalee), Paul (Joyce), Don (Flora), and Jerry.
Jean was preceded in death by, her son-in-law, Robert Burns Crookston; oldest great-grandson, Robert Beau Bowen; brothers and sisters, Grant, Clark and Aller Jay Nielsen, Maxine Larson and Arlene Larsen.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon, Thursday, December 6, at the Allen Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center Street in Logan with Bishop Scott McKendrick conducting. Friends may call from 6:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday evening, December 5, at Allen Hall Mortuary and 10:30 am prior to services. Burial will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery.
