Jed Lindy Pitcher

LEWISTON - Jed Lindy Pitcher passed away at home Monday, August 8, 2011 after a hard fought battle with cancer. His wife and family provided his caretaking with help from Hospice, allowing him to be at home which was his hearts desire.
Jed was born December 4, 1927 in Lewiston, Utah to Henry Cyril and Phoebe Boman Pitcher, being the third of three children. He was raised on the family farm where he learned at an early age the value of work and the joy of receiving the fruits if his labors. At five years old he was thinning sugar beets in the field and milking cows by hand. As a youth, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother Bob. Many are the stories he could tell of those experiences. In later life, his memory was clear and sharp and his life history was recorded and compiled into two full volumes full of detail and humor. He was very proud of that history!
Jed was educated in the local schools, both in Lewiston and Richmond, graduating from North Cache High School. During his senior year he enlisted in the Air Force and served this great country in World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific on the Island of Okinawa. What a terrible thing war was for a young man to experience! He never spoke much about the war because of the memories that it stirred up in him. He tried to put that behind him.
When he returned home, he met Naoma Lloyd, and on August 30, 1948 they were married. A while later they bought a farm in Lewiston. They worked together side by side for many years, while at the same time raising their five children.
To supplement his income, Jed would do custom work for other farmers. Among other things he would drill sugar beets. Farmers always would ask him to plant for them again the next year because his rows were straight and the beets came up with a good stand.
Jed was a progressive farmer, always trying to increase the production of crops on his land. He installed one of the first sprinkling systems in Cache Valley. This really helped both in even irrigation and in driving the alkali down.
In the late 1950's Jed developed a machinery business. This business became Pitcher Sales which is still doing business today, being run by his son Burke.
In February 1986 his beloved wife Naoma passed away and later that year he married Carolyn "Corky" Colby. They celebrated 25 years of marriage together just a week before his passing.
Jed is survived by his wife Corky, his sister Mildred "Millie" Olstead both of Lewiston, Five children, Barbara (Scott) Summers of Paradise, UT., Darwin (Nancy), Mandy Fullmer, Burke (Kaylene) all of Lewiston, UT., and Judy (Art) Winn of Fairview, ID., Three step children, Mary Lou (Larry) Perkins of Wartburg, TN., Jim (Amy) Colby of Highland, UT., and Gary Colby of Providence, UT., 45 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren, all whom he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Naoma, his parents Cyril and Phoebe, a brother Robert Cyril, a brother in law Dan Olmstead, two sons in -law Douglas Frazier and Dennis Fullmer, and two granddaughters Erika and Darcee Summers.
Funeral services will be held on Monday August 15 at noon at the Lewiston 1 st and 2nd ward chapel, 1600 west and Center St. Friends may call from 6 to 8pm Sunday at the Allen- Hall Mortuary, 34 E.
