Our beloved mother, Ida Jeleen Benson Mackey, departed from this world on May 20, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and devotion. She was born on October 8, 1929 to Hazen and Mary Benson in Newton, Utah. She was 94 years old.
Mom married Dean Mackey on June 8, 1949. She always said he was the most handsome man she had ever seen, rivaling even John Wayne. Together they raised their five children in Idaho and Utah, eventually settling in Hyrum where Mom lived for nearly 64 years.
Mom was a cherished daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her love knew no bounds, and her steadfast and nurturing spirit was a guiding light for her family through every joy and challenge.
A talented baker, Mom crafted culinary creations that were more than just delicious treats; they were tokens of her affection. Her kitchen was a sanctuary where the aroma of baked goods mingled with stories and laughter. It was a place where enduring memories were made.
Selfless and hardworking, Mom dedicated her life to the well-being of her family and friends, always putting the needs of her loved ones before her own. Her acts of kindness were countless. Whether it was a comforting embrace, a sympathetic ear, or a warm meal, she gave herself wholeheartedly to enriching the lives of others. She was the heart and soul of her household, the force that held her family together.
Mom was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. A woman of great faith, she held many callings over the course of her life. She had a strong testimony of our Savior and was an ardent believer in the power of prayer.
Mom is survived by her children Kathy (Kent) Christiansen, Linda (David) Petersen, Julie (Rick) Buttars, David Mackey, Holly (Shaun) Broadhead; her brothers Myron and Garth Benson; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Harold Dean Mackey, her parents, and her brothers Kay and Clayne Benson, as well as two brothers lost in infancy and a great granddaughter, Rachel Petersen.
Though we mourn the loss of Mom’s physical presence, we take solace in knowing that she is now at peace, her spirit forever watching over us. Rest in peace, Mom, knowing that your legacy of love will live on in our hearts.
A funeral to celebrate Mom’s life will be held on June 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the church on 245 Apple Drive in Hyrum, Utah. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please spend some extra time with your loved ones.
We would like to extend a special thanks to the hospice workers for taking such good care of our mom during the last months of her life. Thank you for your kindness and support.
