Jennie Pond Reese

September 20, 1904 — October 1, 2006

Jennie Pond Reese
102 years old.
Born September 20, 1904 in Boise, Idaho to Charles Pond and Wilhelmina (Mina) McCann Pond.
Died October 1,2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She is survived by one son, Frank Pond Reese and his wife Catherine (Bagley), 15 Grandchildren, 62 Great Grandchildren and 30 Great-Great Grandchildren (and two more expected soon). She was very proud of her posterity, and until she was in her mid 90's, she never missed sending a Birthday card and a Christmas card to each one. Usually, each card contained a $2.00 bill from "Grandma".
Jennie was an only daughter, with 3 brothers older and 3 brothers younger. She was preceded in death by her parents and all six brothers, Angus, Horace, Newell, Glen, Jay & Dean, and by her daughter, Roma.
She spent most of her youth and teen-age years in Cache Valley, Utah where her father worked as Manager of the Company Store at the Lewiston Sugar Factory. The family home was in High Creek where the children had to walk over the hill to Cove to catch the school bus to Lewiston. Because her mother helped in the store, Jennie became the "chief cook and bottle washer" at home and by the time she was 12 she was practically running the household and baby sitting for neighbors in her spare time. She became a meticulous house keeper and an excellent cook.
Jennie graduated from BY College (later to become Logan High School) and was a good student. She married Frank Woolf Reese on November 5, 1924 in the Logan Temple, and they settled on a Dairy Farm in Benson which was called Riverside at that time. In her many years in Benson, Jennie was active in the LDS Church and held many positions of responsibility, including President of the YWMIA. Later she was called as a Counselor in the Cache Stake YWMIA Presidency, where she served for many years.
Jennie had two children, Roma and Frank Pond. Roma died April 23, 1998.
On November 14, 1955, Frank & Jennie were divorced and Jennie bought a home in Logan near Utah State University. She continued her activity in the LDS Church and enjoyed Seminary Classes at the Institute of Religion during the winter months.
During the summer months Jennie worked at the family resort, Pond's Lodge, in Island Park, Idaho.
Jennie always had a very strong work ethic and her work at Pond's Lodge started as early as 4:00 a.m. and sometimes ended at mid-night. She cleaned cabins, checked in guests, balanced the books, and operated the Post Office. And when necessary she helped in the store and in the restaurant.
When she was 79 years old, Jennie was called on a Proselyting Mission to Arcadia California where she served for 18 months. The Mission President reported that he was worried about Jennie keeping up with the young sisters at first. But soon he was having trouble finding a young Sister Missionary who could keep up with Jennie, going from door to door up and down the California streets, knocking on doors.
Jennie lived in her own home, and took care of herself until she was 98 years old. At that time, because of failing health, Jennie was moved to the Hillside Rehabilitation Center in Salt Lake City, and remained there until the time of her death.
The family expresses sincere appreciation for the kindness and excellent care provided for Jennie by the staff at Hillside Rehabilitation Center, and to all the family members and friends who came to see her, and those who sent cards and letters to her. We also express appreciation to Allen-Hall Mortuary for their professional services.
A viewing will be held on Friday October 6th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Allen-Hall Mortuary at 34 East Center St. in Logan , Utah .
Funeral Services will be Saturday, October 7th at 12:00 noon in the Logan 19th Ward Chapel at 1255 North 600 East, with a viewing starting at 11:00 a.m.Interment will be in the Richmond, Utah Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net
