LOGAN, UTAH – Jerry Lee Goodwin, 72, beloved son,
husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend,
returned to his Heavenly Father on November, 29, 2005
following a courageous battle with Non Hodgkins
Lymphoma.
Born September 10, 1933 in Beaver, Utah to Guy Clark
Goodwin and Alverta Briggs,
Jerry graduated from Milford High School and attended
the University of Utah and BYU before enlisting in the
United States Air Force. During his time in the U.S.
Air Force, Jerry used his skills as an expert trouble
shooter and craftsman of all trade to work in the
Experimental Aircraft Division which began a long and
successful career in aircraft maintenance.
Following an honorable discharge, Jerry sought out and
married his eternal sweetheart, Viola Marie Schenk on
August 22, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple and was
blessed with four wonderful children. Living primarily
in California, but with short stays in Frankfurt,
Germany, he spent the next 25 years working for United
Air Lines and Trans International Airlines as manager
of maintenance. He lived by the philosophy “The proper
amount of duct tape can fix anything.” Jerry left the
airlines to start his own construction company with
his son in the San Francisco Bay area encompassing the
years from 1980 to 1988.
After retiring from the construction business, Jerry
and Viola moved to Utah to be closer to family and
friends. Never one to just sit and do nothing, and at
the urging of his wife for his sanity, Jerry went back
to work as an instructor in the ITE Department at Utah
State University. This led to an opportunity to play
a major role in the design and fabrication of the
Wright Flyer Project; the first actual flying replica
of the Wright Brothers plane involving the use of
modern day technology.
Jerry is a faithful member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints where he has served in
various callings. His and Viola’s most memorable
calling was their mission call to Nauvoo, Ill., where
he served as Manager of Nauvoo Restoration Inc. from
1999 to 2001
Jerry loved life and made the most of it. He could fix
anything and was a man of many talents. Never one to
stand idly by he was always coming to the rescue of
others. His latest project to which he was looking
forward, involved helping his nephew develop a system
for a piece of family property to become self
supporting.
Jerry is survived by his wife, Viola Marie Goodwin,
daughter Teresa (Kurt) Illum, Seattle, Washington; son
Mark Goodwin, Brentwood, California; daughters Shelly
(Rod) Flanigan, Riverton, Utah; Allison (Steve) Milne,
Logan, Utah: nine grandchildren; six step children;
brother, Cullen (Alberta) Goodwin, Murray, Utah: and
