Joan Marie Welch Loosle
LOGAN – Joan Marie Welch Loosle was born October 17, 1929, in Logan, Utah to Wilford Woodruff (W.W.) and Ruby Jane Welch, she was the fourth of five children. She attended Logan schools and on August 31, 1946, she met John W. Loosle on a blind date. He had just come home from the Navy where he had a dream about the girl he should marry. His friend, Jay, showed him a picture of several girls and one beautiful face shown out from among them – it was the face he seen in his dream! He set about to meet Joan and make his dream come true. By New Year’s Eve, 1946, they were engaged. They were married on June 16, 1947 in the Logan LDS temple, just three weeks after she graduated from high school.
John was attending Utah State Agricultural College and Joan worked as a clerk in Allen’s Ladies Store. Their first child was born in May 1949. When John graduated from USAC in June, they moved to Oxnard, California, where John had a job. It was in California that Joan learned from the Spanish American missionaries how to make her wonderful signature enchiladas. This became the family favorite and it is still requested for birthday dinners and special family occasions.
Joan had many interests and talents. She was a beautiful seamstress. She made school clothes, prom dresses, camping blankets, aprons and more. She loved to Quilt and crocheted Afghans. Every child, grandchild, niece, nephew, or family friend could expect to receive one for birthday, wedding or some other special occasion. She crocheted amazing things like doll clothes and blankets, spaceships with little Aliens, Easter baskets, and more. She embroidered gorgeous tablecloths, pillow cases, and quilt tops. She always had some kind of handwork by her side.
She enjoyed making many different kinds of candy. At Christmas time she would dip hundreds of her homemade chocolates to share with family and friends. She enjoyed baking pies and decorating cakes for special occasions. She also enjoyed puzzles. Once they were put together, John would put a special coating on them and then they would be hung in the house, their cabin, and their garage. They completed more than 100 puzzles.
Joan loved to work in the garden they planted every year for nearly 60 years. It has varied in size from very large to very small but it always produced wonderful vegetables for their table. She was an amazing cook. She loved to serve her family and friends beautiful meals, from the glamorous formal dinners to the simple dinners with family gathering around the table.
She has always loved nature and the beauties of the mountains. One of her favorite places was their cabin at Bear Lake. She loved to go camping, especially in southern Utah at Arches and Dead Horse Point. She also loved riding dirt roads in their jeep or on a motorbike. She had a great appreciation of all God’s creations.
Joan was always an avid reader. Her home is filled with books she loved. The scriptures and church books were her favorite ones to read. She was always faithfully active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many different callings. She has served many years in Primary, as a teacher, chorister and in the presidency. Most of her later years of service were in Relief Society in the presidency or teaching. She served for many years in the nursing home as the Relief Society President and then as a teacher. She has spent her life in service, giving her all in every calling. She was a lifelong member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP). She always had a smile on her face, even thru her last days in this realm. She had a beautiful singing voice, a listening ear, and was loved and admired by everyone.
Joan passed away from cancer at the age of 84 on May 8, 2014 surrounded by her husband and daughters. John and Joan had five children, John W. Jr (Z) of Page, AZ; Linda Marie Loosle of Logan; Moriah Rae Uligh (Phil) of Kimberly, Idaho; Tina Louise King (Chris) of South Jordan; and Myndee Joan Garrett (Randy) of Herriman.
