Heaven gained an amazing daughter of God on Monday, December 30, 2024. JoAnn Jorgensen Hoth, 87, passed from this life at her home in Smithfield, Utah of causes incident to age. 

She was born, the second of four children, to Enos Leland and Relda Fuhriman Jorgensen on October 18, 1937, in Logan, Utah. JoAnn was raised in Logan, living an idyllic childhood with family and friends on Canyon Road. She attended Whittier Elementary, Logan Jr High, and graduated from Logan High School.

After graduation, JoAnn worked in Salt Lake City and attended LDS Business College. It was at that time that she met DeVerle Charles Hoth, a newly returned missionary of 3 days, at his brother’s wedding in September 1957. They quickly fell in love, were engaged in October and married in the Logan LDS Temple on March 7, 1958.

JoAnn and DeVerle were blessed with six children, 4 boys and 2 girls. Family has always been important to JoAnn, and together they enjoyed many outdoor activities: waterskiing, boating, camping, fishing, and sports. In 1966, they moved to Brigham City, Utah, where they spent 8 wonderful years.

In 1974, they moved their family to Smithfield, Utah, and started their own restaurant in Hyde Park, ‘DeVerle’s Juniper Inn’. JoAnn was the bookkeeper, baker and hostess, all while raising her 5 active children. She spent tireless hours working alongside DeVerle and their kids for 30 years, making Juniper Inn a well-known, beloved restaurant in Cache Valley. In February 2003, Juniper Inn caught fire and burned to the ground. Many people have remarked that it was the only way to get JoAnn and DeVerle to retire!

JoAnn had many talents beyond her cooking and baking skills. She enjoyed scrapbooking, tole painting, genealogy, sewing, and quilting. She provided many of her posterity with a special “Grandma Quilt”. She was well known for her delicious rolls and pies, dipped chocolates, and orange cheese jello. Her handwriting was so beautiful that it looked like a typewriter font. 

Later in life she studied alternative health therapies, foot zoning, and essential oils. She was always willing to help others find wellness. JoAnn’s drive to learn about health was prompted by her diagnosis of Lymphoma Cancer in 1990. She fought hard for several years, finally receiving a bone marrow transplant.

JoAnn and DeVerle and their family, along with their friends, Vern and Carol Clark and their family, built a cabin at Star Valley Ranch in Wyoming, a project that began in 1981 and took 10 years to finish. Many wonderful memories were made in that beautiful setting. In 1998, she and DeVerle served an LDS mission to Tallahassee Florida, where they met and served many wonderful people. Upon their return, they enjoyed serving for two years as ordinance workers in the Logan LDS Temple. She and DeVerle moved to a retirement community in Smithfield in 2004, and purchased a winter home as well in St. George. They loved adding new people to their ever-growing circle of friends.

JoAnn has always had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of His Atonement, and of the reality of eternal families. She has always been an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and faithfully served in many capacities, including Stake Relief Society President, which she thoroughly enjoyed. In a journal entry, JoAnn stated one rule for living: “It’s never too soon to do a kindness.” This is the way JoAnn lived her life. We are so proud and thankful to be part of her life on this earth, and into eternity.

JoAnn is survived by her husband of almost 67 years, DeVerle Charles Hoth; her children, Kirk DeVerle (Maria Keeler), Kelly Wayne (Jenifer Jamison), Tracy Leland (Kim Jones), Jason Charles, and Sherisse (Greg Darrough), all of Smithfield; her 50 grandchildren and great grandchildren; her sister Mary (Gordon Stephenson), and her brother Jay (Ida) Jorgensen.

She is preceded in death by her parents, infant daughter, Kathrine Hoth, son-in-law, Jason Jamison, and brother, Doug Jorgensen.

A viewing will be held Friday January 3, 2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street, Logan, UT.

Funeral services will be held at noon, Saturday, January 4, 2024 in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 625 E 600 S, Smithfield, UT. A viewing will precede the funeral service at the church from 10:30 – 11:30 am.
