April 30, 1917 – January 22, 2010

John Charles Jones, age 92, passed from this life peacefully on Friday, January 22. John, also known as “Jack” and “Johnny”, was born in Logan on April 30, 1917, the seventh child of Utah Pioneer Parley Parker Jones and Margaret Ann Hjort.

Johnny attended Logan City Schools, graduating from Logan High School in 1935, and was recently recognized as one of the oldest living alumni of Ellis Elementary School. After high school, John worked at ZCMI in Salt Lake City and when his family needed him, he returned to Logan to operate the farm. In addition to farming, he delivered coal, worked construction, and was successful in real estate endeavors, owning and managing many residential and commercial rental properties. John strongly believed that daily physical work was essential and therapeutic, and he continued well into his 89th year.

Having grown up during the Great Depression and worked diligently on the family farm, Jack learned early in life the values of hard work, sacrifice, saving, and investing; he taught these values to his children and grandchildren. His family members remember well Jack’s most frequent advice, “Save your money!” Jack was proud of his pioneer and railroad heritage. His father Parley and grandfather Evan were pioneers, arriving in Utah from Wales before completion of the railroad. Both became early railroad engineers. In 1996 Jack enjoying participating in Utah’s centennial celebration by riding the historic train from Cache Valley to Salt Lake City.

Jack was very proud of each of his 4 children, 17 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, and he thoroughly enjoyed the daily visits and frequent family gatherings at his and Doris’s home. Jack also enjoyed singing throughout his life and during his last year sang for and with staff members at Logan Nursing and Rehab as they cared for him. He was an active member of the LDS Church, serving in a variety of capacities and at the time of his death was a High Priest in Logan’s Northwood Ward.

Surviving family members include John’s loving and supportive wife of 65 years, Doris Dahle Jones, and children, Roger C. Jones (Susan), Gloria J. Leonhardt (Laurence), Virginia L. Jeppesen (Brent), and Allen D. Jones (Diane) along with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. John was preceded in death by his daughter Doris Ann, parents, five sisters, one brother, and two step-brothers.
