John Steele Smith of Nibley, Utah, passed away Jan. 17, 2013, at home.
He was the son of Samuel David Smith, Sr. and Roberta Edith Steele Smith. John was the middle child of nine. His siblings are Sam (deceased), Margaret (deceased), Wm. Harold, Fleda, Julia, Martin, Peter and Patricia. He is also survived by his wife, Ardyth B. Smith; his five children, Sandra (Richard Dabney) of Warner Robins, Ga., Jeanne (James Kirby) of Couer d' Alene, Idaho, Jonathan (Christina Smith) of Fielding, Utah, David (Lisa Smith) of New York and adopted daughter, Monica (Gregory Clark) of Texas. He had 14 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. They also sponsored and loved many foster children: Ayse and Zeynep of Turkey, Ly, Long and Chen of Vietnam, and the Choie family of Korea.
John served an LDS Mission in Florida at age 17, before entering military service. He served in the Navy in World War II, serving as a gunner and radio operator on a Navy PBM at Corpus Christi, Texas. John went into pilot training with the United States Air Force after marrying his sweetheart Ardy in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on Dec. 5, 1947. He loved flying, and flew many different planes during his military career. He also served as a Squadron Commander in many of his assignments until he retired as a Lt. Colonel. His family traveled the world with him, living in Alaska, Mississippi, New York, Turkey, Germany, and Japan, until moving to Cache Valley in 1970.
John served the Lord wherever they lived. He sat apart from his family "on the stand" for 35 years, serving as a bishop in Biloxi, Mississippi, a District President in Turkey, a high councilman in Germany, a first counselor to three bishops in Nibley and in a Bishopric in a student ward at USU .
With his wife, Ardy, they served for five years in the Logan Temple, and served a mission for the LDS church to Costa Rica in 1989.
John Steele Smith was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him, especially his family, and will be missed so much.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, at Allen-Hall Mortuary in Logan. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the LDS church at 3701 S. 450 West, Nibley, Utah.
