John Fred Woodward, passed away peacefully early in the morning of September 27, 2009 at the Logan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was greeted by his Savior and Redeemer and by many family and friends who had gone before him. He was 89 years 364 days old, just one day short of his 90th birthday.
He was born Sept. 28, 1919 in Wellsville, Utah. He was the 4th of8 children born to John Baugh and Amy Williams Woodward. He also had 2 sisters and a brother from his father's 1st marriage.
He attended school in Wellsville and at South Cache High School in Hyrum. He also attended Utah State University, Weber College, and B.Y.U., where he majored in Automotive Engineering. He was an Instructor of Auto Mechanics in the Vocational Dept. at Intermountain Indian School at Brigham City, Utah. While there, he was honored by receiving a special Superior Performance Award from the Bureau of Indian Affairs at Washington D.C. He retired with 31 years of service July 1, 1977. '
He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Larsen, Dec. 23, 1942 in the Logan Temple. He served with the 9th Armored Division in the European Theater during World War II. They landed on Utah Beach and fought across to Czechoslovakia. The Division received a Presidential Citation for their service, having participated in 5 major battles.
He has always been an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ ofLatter Day Saints. He served as Executive Secretary to two Bishops, High Priest Secretary, Superintendent of the Sunday School for 11 years. He was a Counselor in the Branch Presidency. He also served in Scouting and on the Genealogy Committee.
He has enjoyed farming and mechanic work. He also loved to garden and share his produce with family and friends.
John and Barbara enjoy doing things together. They have filled 3 missions for the Church, serving in Atlanta, Georgia, Salt Lake Temple Square, and a 2 year Stake Mission for Wellsville Stake. They were officiators at the Logan Temple for 9 years. They love to travel and have visited many interesting places all over the world. They enjoyed riding a motorcycle together. They loved to ballroom dance and did so for over 60 years. ~
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Barbara L. Woodward and by his children, Charles and Nancy Woodward, Clinton, Utah; Fred G. and Brenda Woodward, Wellsville, Utah; and Linda Woodward, Declo, Idaho. They have 9 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Louise (Ross) Nielsen, Hyrum.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Irene May, Owen Hilton Woodward, Winnifred Grano, Jack Clayton Woodward, Ruth Johnson Hansen, Joseph Garland Woodward, Howard Ross Woodward, Mary Andersen, and Paul Douglas Woodward.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Wellsville 4th Ward Chapel at 195 South Center in Wellsville. Friends and family may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center St in Logan Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 am. prior to the services.
