John Leland "Lee" Bateman 1919 ~ 2007

LOGAN - John Leland Bateman, 88, died Wednesday, December, 26 2007 from complications of cancer and age.

He was born January 8, 1919, in Richmond, Utah to John Alfred and Jane Amelia Smith Bateman. He graduated from North Cache High School in Richmond, Utah and Stevens-Henager Business School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Like his father he played trombone in a local dance band that performed throughout Cache Valley for a number of years.

He married Bertha Selma Bergquist in the Logan Temple on December 12, 1941. They moved to San Francisco, CA where he served in the San Francisco Navy Pacific Fleet Headquarters until 1945 when he was honorably discharged and they moved to River Heights. He worked for Utah Job Service for 36 years while at the same time enjoyed being a father to three children.

Lee was a charter member of the River Heights Lions Club serving as its President in 1956-57 and as the Secretary and Treasurer for several years. He was also active in the River Heights Wards of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He enjoyed traveling, gardening, fishing, golf and serving the community through his involvement with the River Heights Lions Club.
Surviving are his, two sons, Val J (Bonnie) Bateman, Holladay, Utah; Ted L. Bateman, Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Ann Day, Sandy, Utah; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren and his sister Zelda E. Stoddard. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Bertha B. Bateman, brother Albert S. Bateman and sisters Violet C. Bair, Wanda S. Spackman, and Laurel B. Gyllenskog.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 PM on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at the Allen-Hall Mortuary Chapel, 34 East Center Street, Logan, Utah. Friends and family may call at the mortuary on Saturday prior to the services from 10:30 to 11:30 AM. Interment will be in the Providence City Cemetery. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Legacy House of Logan, Logan Regional Hospital and Sunshine Terrace who provided such loving care to Lee during the past two months.
