JOHN W. CARLISLE, M.D. 1930-2009
LOGAN, UTAH: John Willard Carlisle died on March 22 at Sunshine Terrace from pneumonia, He was born on March 16, 1930 to John Crandall Carlisle and Afton Ballard Carlisle in Logan, Utah .. He married Nancy Norton on July 10,1953.
Most of his life he lived in Logan, but spent part of his childhood in Beaver and Payson, Utah and Berkeley California. For a period of time he and his parents lived at the Topaz Internment Camp near Delta, Utah, where his dad was in charge of the education program and he attended school.
He attended Utah State University (USAC at that time) where he majored in zoology and chemistry. He was editor of the 1951-52 yearbook (Buzzer) and Student body president in 1952-53. He also received the President's University Citizenship Award his senior year. He attended the University of Utah School of Medicine, graduating in 1956. He then completed a pediatric internship and residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in 1959. After completing his pediatric training, he served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps at De Witt Army Hospital at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. He returned to Logan, Utah in 1961 and worked as a pediatrician in the Budge Clinic until 1976. At that time he accepted the position of Director of Student Health Services at Utah State University. He worked in this capacity until his early retirement in 1989.
Along with his work, Dr. Carlisle had many interests, among which were art, photography, and music. He was also an avid reader. His family meant a great deal to him, not only his immediate family, but he also had a close relationship with many in his extended family. He was a very sensitive, compassionate, and loving person. His passing leaves a tremendous void. He was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was very proud of his pioneer ancestry, including one of his ancestors who was a member of the Martin Handcart Company.
He is survived by his wife Nancy and their children: Catherine (August) Bush, Elizabeth Carlisle, Jack (Mary) Carlisle, Ann (Gregory) Averill, Emily (David) Godfrey, and Ed (Mara) Carlisle. At the time of his death he had 24 grandchildren, and 11 greatgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother and sister who died in infancy.
Services will be held at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan, Utah on Friday, March 27 at 12:00 pm. There will be a viewing Thursday evening from 6-8 pm at the mortuary and on Friday from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery following the service.
