Jolene Giles

November 11, 1935 — April 14, 2011

Ogden - Jolene Nielsen Giles, 75 - daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend - passed away peacefully at McKay-Dee Hospital on April 14, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.

Jolene was born on November 11, 1935, in Logan, Utah, to Ellis W. and Edna Marcusen Nielsen. She was the fourth of five daughters raised in Hyrum, Utah, where she attended school and graduated from South Cache High School. Jolene was taught to work hard from an early age and worked on the family’s dry farm in Oneida County, Idaho. She moved to Salt Lake City where she earned her Associates Degree in Secretarial Sciences and later worked for an insurance company.

Jolene married Gerald D. Giles in the Logan LDS Temple on July 12, 1957, and raised their three daughters in Hyrum, Utah, San Luis Obispo, California, and North Ogden, Utah.

Her work experience included lunch worker at Bates Elementary School and tax examiner for Internal Revenue Service, where she later retired. As an active and faithful member of the LDS Church, she served in the Primary and Relief Society. In addition, she looked forward to and regularly attended the Daughters of the Utah Pioneer’s meetings and social events. Her service was not limited to church; she rendered countless acts of service, many of which were anonymous.

Among her greatest qualities were her love of family, compassion, appreciation, humility, and work ethic. She will be remembered for her excellent cooking, quilting, gardening, and sewing. She taught her loved ones about courage and dignity as she bore her trials with cancer and always showed love and appreciation to those who cared for her.

Jolene is survived by her three daughters whom she referred to as “the most wonderful daughters:” Julie (Harold) Muir of Clinton, Utah; Karen Ann (Kendall) Madsen of West Jordan, Utah; and Pamela Giles (Eric) Lee of Layton, Utah; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild whom she cherished and adored: Corey Thomas (Stephanie) Muir and their baby Landry, Curtis Kendall Madsen, Michelle Karen Madsen, Kevin Gerald Madsen, Laura Ann Madsen, and Joshua Robert Lee. She is also survived by three sisters: LuDean Thorstensen of Ogden, Utah; Geraldine (Gary) Leishman of Hyrum, Utah; and Deanna (Allen) Rubin of New York, New York; and many nieces and nephews.

Jolene was preceded in death by her parents, Ellis and Edna Nielsen, and her oldest sister Doreen Nielsen.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 East Center Street in Logan. A viewing will be held prior to services at 1:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Hyrum City Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenmortuaries.net
